OVERALL Impressions: Phillips Auction Impressions

Have been watching this auction since the beginning. It is interesting to see the Rolex prices quite strong while some others, which one might expect to be strong, were quite weak. Am wondering your thought overall, as it shows great strength for Rolex, and vintage / important mechanical timepiece collecting in general.

My impression is that the market for vintage watches is running crazy, which is something we all personally may benefit off.
With that in mind I see that "flashier" watches go for less than subtle stainless steel models. Just my observation.

I live and work close to the location but Unfortunately the work schedule couldn't have lined up worse.

I'll have to catch the resale :)

I'm not really surprised why the PP 1518 SS perpetual calendar chrono lost the title of the world's most expensive watch to Rolex

The Paul Newman's Paul Newman Daytona packs the most lethal punch

Rolex + Iconic + Provenance + Celebrity Status + Cool Factor + Massive Publicity

If you're thirsty, just grab a Coke or a Pepsi to get in the Rolex spirit.

There is now a huge "investment" element to a Rolex nowadays and that has permeated from vintage to even modern mass produced models. It smells like tulip fever but it could be sustainable, if Rolex keep on top of the market. Even a Black Swan Global event could now see a flight to Rolex, like gold, as a value haven, so might not be disastrous.

i think the auction was amazing. phillips did what they're supposed to do; get top dollar for lots.

but the real story is that a STORY sells emotion.

the PND sold because of paul, not because it was a daytona. it was engraved, and came about when the brand was maturing for what happens today.

there won't ever be another watch like this for a long, long time purely because there's no more artists like PN (maybe steve mcqueen) who personified their activities and jobs together.

there's also way too many watches today. even modern 'icons' like mayer, seinfeld and the lot have too many watches for any one model to stand out. even they're buying vintage because the products are so accessible.

either way, its a good day to be a wis and i hope the new owner shares it and doesn't lock it up.

When's the next big Steve McQueen coming on the market? Surely now's a good time.
