No more steel Subs in 2018?!

On another watch forum, a couple of gentlemen are propagating the rumor that steel Subs will be discontinued in 2018, to be replaced with white gold special edition versions.

Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

I'm incredulous myself, but considering the massive steel Sub shortage and also the fact that Rolex had the audacity to make a watch as iconic as the Pepsi GMT into an exclusively PM model, I cannot say I would be entirely surprised.

Thoughts? Opinions? Has anyone here also encountered these rumors?

Cheers!

Never believe all the crap you read online. Only Rolex would know and to stop making a Submariner in steel takes this to a new level.

The chances of that happening are next to none.

Having just purchased a SS SubC, I 99% doubt, but hope you are correct. That would just about double the future price of all SS Subs. I would just flip mine, add a little cash, and end up buying a WG version.

There is definitely some logic to this thought. With the insane demand, why even sell SS models? If you can sell a million SS models per year, or could sell 500k PM models, which one comes out ahead? Which one maintains the brand image in a world where smart watches are taking up wrist real estate everywhere?

I've heard the rumor.

And to those who believe this, I have a bridge or two I'd like to sell you.

Cheap.

If you call now, I'll throw in an airport.

Hard to believe it will happen. But, it certainly would make sense to sell 200k PM watches instead of 800k mixed ones. Better profit with not so much work to do. Brand image would be more clear as well, Rolex is always PM.

Then again the roots of Rolex are not in PM at all. But Platinum Sub would be interesting.

But they could restrict supply of SS models and adopt a Daytona supply model. Then Rolex could claim to be remaining true to a their heritage as a manafacturer of affordable steel utility watches and increase turnover on the more profitable gold models. That would be a nightmare.

Rumours will be forever rumours.
Rolex keeps secrets better than the FBI and CIA combined so I'd doubt anything they didn't announce directly.

I've also read Submariners will no longer be made of steel but unicorn horn.

I think maybe that person has seen the hardback Rolex catalogue (it may be the latest, I got mine yesterday) and assumed this due to no SS Subs being shown in it

IMO no one has invested more time, effort, engineering, advertising, brand equity and everything else that goes along with it in creating an extremely popular and quite expensive premium line of stainless steel watches. They occupy the dominant position in the sweet spot of the market. In no logical world do they walk away from that

I've kinda wondered with the huge steps Tudor has taken in recent years, if Rolex would focus more on going after the high end market (AP/PP) and leave Tudor as the Rolex of yesteryear. But cutting their most iconic sports model next year? I can't see it, unless it was just replaced with a Submariner Master II.
