I’m Thinking Of Gifting My Watches

First off let me say that I love my watch collection and get an enormous thrill each morning when I strap on a superb timepiece.
Some of you may know that my collection has been acquired relatively recently. Life’s circumstances just did not permit me to spend so much money on myself at a younger age while other obligations took precedence.
Lately I’ve been kicking around the idea of gifting three of my watches to my three sons now instead of bequeathing them in my will. I’ll be 67 in 4 months, which is relatively young by today’s standards, and I don’t plan on leaving this world anytime soon, but you never know. After a heart attack in 2009 and triple bypass surgery I feel great, and younger than my years. But that health scare combined with family history has given me pause to rethink my original plan.
I think it would please me just as much by seeing those watches on my sons wrists than on my own but I don’t want to have second thoughts later on thinking, “You did all you could possibly do for your family while they were growing up. They’re all successful, with good jobs and lovely families. Enjoy the few possessions you have now while you can”. I hope that doesn’t sound selfish.
Maybe, I’m just overthinking this whole thing. I’m not leaning strongly in either direction right now and it might not happen. But it is something I’ve thought about. Frankly, there are still a few watches on my radar as possible future acquisitions.

That is a really nice heartfelt gesture Angelo. Do your sons have the same passion that you do for watches? That would be my only concern.

That’s very kind!!
I, for one, would prefer you keep them and keep posting on TRF.
Always enjoy your input, Angelo.

And 67 is a teenager in my book.

I suggest keeping them and enjoying them. They'll get them in due course.

I think it's a great idea. You could keep the Explorer and gift the other three. More satisfying to see things passed down than have it happen only after you're gone.

But to avoid bickering I'd try to keep the gifting relatively equal in value. Maybe by throwing in an additional item with the Tudor and Nomos.

They probably don’t share my overall passion for watches Matt. I guess partly because I didn’t have any while they were growing up.

Unless one of them really loves the Tudor or Nomos. That would solve that.

Hey Angelo i say keep them and enjoy them for a while. You are still young man.

Consider gifting them in 20 years time. If your children cannot appreciate them i shall be a candidate for being adopted

I know i have come second or third but i am more handsome than Mon and Paul

I am in a similar position, I have more than I can wear and really have no desire at the moment to buy anymore. I have been waiting for some special occasion to give my son my 14060M (he will get them all anyway) so he can enjoy it now. Not sure why i am waiting?

If you are not wearing them then seeing your kids enjoy them maybe more satisfying and a very nice gesture.

No, your just thinking...and thats a good thing. Im 43, but at 23 I nearly died in a car wreck. Health scares can be an awesome catalyst. Not here to produce an answer or solution to your question...but have a few more questions I ask myself whenever decisions are difficult for me.

What do I really VALUE?

If I could look back at my legacy after I die, HOW or WOULD that affect my decision?

Angelo, I agree... it sounds to me like you have more then you can wear... doing a kind hearted act like giving it to your children will be an awsome and karma-inducing gesture...

Thought this was a Xmas giveaway thread, clicked on it really quick.

I think it's a great idea seeing your sons with your watches as long as you think they would appreciate them.

What a dilemma. Kudos for you for thinking about it. Tough call, but there is something great about gifting someone something really special. Gifted my Dad a Sub Date a few years ago and everytime I see him with it on, it just brings a big smile to my face. Initially, I was going to trade it in on another watch as I ended up with a no date and preferred it. I did not need both of them, so asked my wife what she thought about me giving it to dad. She was all for it. Honestly, it was one of the most rewarding things I have done. Seeing his face when he opened the box was priceless. I did it on Father's day. He was speechless. Big tough guy but this really got him. Only second time I have ever seen him show a tear

I would guess you would find similar joy from seeing your boys wearing your watches.

I’m Thinking Of Gifting My Watches

If you are ready to gift them and you think they will wear/appreciate them... Then I say go for it! Getting to watch your Son's wear and enjoy watches that you have done the same with will feel good, warm your heart and leave a legacy that will out live your time on this planet.

I'm with Larry on this one. You've got plenty of time left to enjoy them BUT if this is what you're thinking or want, and you know they'll cherish them in use, why not? No wrong choice to be made here though and keep us updated

JMHO but I'm pretty sure the whole process of passing on your watches will mean a
lot more to all of you, now, rather than after you're gone.
Remembering good times is nice but sharing them is always better.

I haven’t mentioned my thoughts to either of my boys but maybe I should.
Part of my indecision stems from the fact that I didn’t own a nice watch while they were growing up, never spoke of my desire to own one, and I honestly don’t know if they even wear a watch as adults. I wouldn’t want to gift them now only to have them sit in dresser drawer. I would want them to be worn and then eventually passed down to my grandchildren.

Have the talk and even if they don't want them now tell them how important they are to you and let them see them grace your wrist from time to time, so when they do inherit them, they will mean something to your kids and they will be treasured all the more.

Ang, I think that this is a great idea, my only caveat would be letting them know that these watches are “living” things so to say. They need to be maintained and that doesn’t come cheap. Many non watch people think that an expensive timepiece will just run for decades because, well, they’re damn expensive! It would be a shame as you said that they would eventually just sit in a drawer because the owner can’t or won’t spend the money needed to keep it running.
Other than that I’d say that’s a very heartfelt gesture if you decide to do it.
Oh btw, I actually feel like a son to you,,,, ummmm, Dad,,,

My father has been giving all his kids their inheritance a little at a time recently so he can see them enjoying it.
With such a personal matter I'm sure doing what makes you happy is key.

You’re right Tim. I don’t think they have the slightest idea nor ever thought of the care needed for these magnificent machines, which is understandable since they don’t own one. Heck, I didn’t either until I joined this forum.
They would need a Watch Ownership 101 class.
Even if they’re not into watches right now, I would hope that knowing how much they mean to me would make it mean more to them later on.
