Wow!!! You need to do a massive photo shoot from all angles for benchmarking purposes! This might not be vintage yet but us freaks in the vintage section post numerous threads on the topic “how would you rate the condition on this one”...and this example would be a great NOS example to compare lugs, case, stretch, polishing etc. with

Yes, for sure I'll post some pics here to show the flawless condition of this watch, when there is better natural light. It's a grey and cloudy day today in our neck of the woods.

I've never owned a Rolex dated before 2001. This is the first time I've ventured into the '80s territory but I could not pass up on the opportunity to acquire this DD36.

It's really nice to see the enthusiastic response to the 18038 here. I am now just realizing that there is a strong appreciation for this reference.

Great news! Thanks a lot! 18038 is a true classic! First automatic DD ref with sapphire...!

It's my first time owning an older model- year Rolex so I am not very well-versed in the difference between reference numbers 18038 and 18238. I just pulled out the warranty certificate and it does show 18038. I can confirm this is a single quick set. My understanding is that the 18238 has the double quickset.

Just curious, what are the differences between the 18038 and 18238 cases?

Amazing timepiece. I hope I get the opportunity one day to pick up a similar watch in a similar condition.

Here we go! There was ample natural light this morning so I was able to take these pics. Hope these photos do the watch justice.

The 18038 case is about .3 to .5 mm thicker so it 'wears' slightly larger than the 18238. I also believe the 18038 has a steel case tube where the 18238 has a gold one. Another thing I like about the 18038 is the sheer amount of dials that were offered. Probably had more dial options than any Rolex.

Needs some detailing though.

Imaging walking in to an AD 1987 and just straight pointing at the 18038 and say “I’ll take that watch!”, true Yuppie move! : )

1987 should be 18038 (single quickset) as the 18238 double quickset) appeared in 1988?

wow, great piece, fits your wrist nicely.

I see that you wear it on your right. My wife does this sometime too, despite my admonitions that such atrocious violations of our accepted customs violates the natural order of things and threatens to send the planet flying off its axis. Its what separates us from the apes.

I am embarassed to say I am not up-to-date on watch speak. Does "detailing" mean polishing? I figured once I send it to RSC for full service, they would "detail" it as they deem necessary?

The bracelet does not look very clean on the close up pictures? I would give it a good clean up with water, soap and toothbrush.

Oh I see. Yeah, hopefully RSC will take care of the aforementioned detailing once it goes in.
