I don't get the fruity appeal of Aventus or the sweetness in the base. It's OK, but I can't figure out it's wide appeal.

Whale vomit. It's expensive. It's supposed to be an aphrodisiac. Not kidding, google it.

I know what ambergris is and I think that it's fine when well blended, I just don't understand why Aventus is such a popular fragrance.
If you want the aphrodesiac effects of ambergris, there are many choices out there. Pineapple fruit cologne ain't for me.

I'm sampling Atelier Cologne's Gold Leather today.
Top notes: bitter orange from Seville, Indian saffron, Jamaican rum
Heart notes: plum, davana from India, eucalyptus from California
Base notes: gaiac wood from India, cedarwood from Texas, leather & oud accord
It's got a great development and lasts a long, long time. I detect a bit of incense in there as well, dancing back and forth with the eucalyptus which starts almost minty. I like these scents that evolve over several hours.
This one will not be for everyone, but it is a huge winner for me, and I'll certainly be getting a big bottle.

Very well described Although I believe the cedar wood notes you're smelling are from Arizona

That's a great fragrance. It's my favorite summer cologne. Winter time cologne for me is Creed Himalaya. Both great fragrances. They don't smell anything like the mall ones that are out there. They seem to me more mature and civilized. Again, there aren't many companies that gave been around for 200+ years, so with that Creed knows what they are doing.

Had a chance to try some Creed while visiting NY and must say Aventus wasn't for me but I did like the Green Irish Tweed, will have to take some time out to go and properly sample the full range.

My currently odour is Channel Allure Homme Sport.

Aventus has batch variations. There is a more smokey version. You can find the batch numbers at basenotes in thier forums.

I have an old bottle of Creed Tabarome in the back of my closet. I bought it years ago as I read that it was the favorite of Humphry Bogart as well as Winston Churchill, I gave it a sniff today, forgot just how well it smelled. I'm no expert but it was a tobacco, leather and bergamot scent. I'll have to start wearing it again.

One of my faves is Poivre de Samarconde from the Hermessence line by Hermes. Although lately, I've been using La Nuit Del Homme by YSL.

The vintage Tabarome (just says Tabarome vs Tabarome Millesime) has been discontinued for a while. I didn't really start exploring fragrances until last year, so i missed out on it. I like the new version, and bought some, but it supposedly it doesn't hold a candle to the original. I hope you have the big flacon (500ml) as it is a very highly prized cologne. It's value increased dramatically as it is now impossible to find anywhere, selling right now for $900/oz (30ml). I was thinking about getting a 1.5ml spray sample, but at over $50 for something I can only wear a few times and knowing that I will not buy more of it unless it gets rereleased, it seems silly.
Enjoy your prize.

Hmmm, I didn't know this I'll have to dig it back out. I bought it probably 10-12 years ago. I'd part with it for $900.00!!

I can't answer the "why", but apparently a lot of other people like it as much as I do! I have never had so many people (male & female) ask me what I am wearing when I have on Aventus... and not in a bad way!

Different strokes. I guess that is why there are so many colognes to choose from.

I am still developing my tastes, but currently use:
  • Ferragamo F <- Rarely, since my wife can't stand it.
  • Prada Amber <- Sports
  • Gucci Guilty <- Travel
  • Versace Man <- Work
  • Versace Man <- On the town

Bleu de Chanel was my go-to cologne until I found Chez Bond from Bond No.9

I've never been too crazy about cologne but I love it. Women have stopped me to ask what cologne I'm wearing

Just checked my bottle, it's the newer one, oh well I think that it still smells great. I'd love to get a whiff of the older stuff though.

After reading that Prada Luna Rossa was an excellent after shave, I went and bought it and the cologne. I have to say that I have received many compliments from the ladies.

Oops I meant to say Chez Bond in my earlier post (said Chez NY). It is smells great but remains subtle-not overpowering. My wife often gets comments at work (we work together) like "I'm getting my husband/boyfriend cologne, what does your husband wear?"
