Servicing a 14060M

Hi all,

I am the proud owner of a 2011 Rolex 14060M Submariner and I feel it is now time for a service. Bezel no longer clicking and watch makes weird vibration when moving the wrist. Would like to keep all the external hardware original and avoid a polish. Does Rolex take requests to avoid replacing what they may see as “flawed” eg, small chip in crystal, dent/scratch in bezel.

Thanks!

Rolex evaluates your watch and will make recommendations and requirements.

You can choose from the recommendations, but you must accept their requirements before they do the work.

They would likely require replacement of a chipped crystal, and it is something that you should do. Inserts can get pretty beat up and will not affect functionality.

Rolex likes to request new hands, inserts and at times dials for older watches. For certain they would require a new crystal. I would have them service it and leave everything outside of a new crystal alone. You probably need to determine polish or no polish before sending to Rolex. I have requested no polish in the past and my 16570 came back with the lugs incredibly thin.

Be sure to request the watchmaker to regulate the watch as accurately as possible. I see you are in California. At Rolex Beverly Hills I sent in a Datejust that was +2 and it came back +6. I just assumed they regulated their watches as good as possible.

Like Larry said crystal will be replaced if chipped when serviced, things like bezel inserts again not a problem to replace as they cost very little. As for polish again not a problem if only done at normal routine service after watch will look like new.

Like all regulation its done on a machine which could report +2 seconds, but on the wrist and that persons daily wearing habits could vary its that simple.

Anything that is not included in the RSC price of a routine service WILL require your approval. That much is in your control.

If they state a replacement of crystal, bezel insert or watch hands is required, and they refuse to perform the routine service without such replacements, and you disagree, then you may have it returned and be out of pocket for the shipping and the RSC charge for evaluation.

But there is no real problem with replacing such minor items since you have a modern watch which won’t suffer any real diminished value with those service parts.

Of course, if you’re worried, then you could have an independent watchmaker perform the routine service. But you may still have some internal replacement parts which that watchmaker says are required. For example, to remedy that sound you sensed while wearing your watch. At that point would you refuse to replace the autowind mechanism just to maintain “originality”?

I tend to agree with Larry and Peter on their points.

If were 14060 with tritium dial and handset, I prob will worry about handset change. with 14060M I am not so worry about.

Agreed
It's a 2011 absolute base model Sub that sounds like it's had a pretty full life and well overdue for a proper service.
Anything Rolex will want to do won't likely affect value based on originality factors with the only thing I'd probably pass on would be a polish.
Going forward, personally i may seriously consider sending it in for a service a little earlier before funny noises start emanating from it though

I wouldn't be afraid to send that one to Dallas, if it were a vintage sub (4 digit ) or something where you were afraid of losing the patina hands and or dial there are other places to go to that respect a vintage piece and won't blindly go ahead or insist something has to be replaced. I have a 5513 that the main thing is the cool dial, I would be shattered if it's was replaced during a full service. Again, if you are concerned with such things there are other places. Good luck.
