Rolex Datejust 36 Ultimate Review

This Rolex model has always been a favorite of mine. I'll start with what I just enjoyed straight off the bat but there is a ton that makes me enjoy this Datejust model and size. I think that 36mm case size on the Datejust is how it should be, it carries a classic look, size and often aesthetic. I have to dive further into the specific model of Datejust because there is a lot more that makes this piece excellent. I read in https://www.bobswatches.com/rolex-bl...ate-guide.html that the first model was made in 1945 which plays to my current love, it has the classic look. There realistically is a model that will check just about everyones boxes when looking for a watch, whether you are looking deep into historic movements or into just simple aesthetics this model is a perfect entry watch into the Rolex family. An everyday watch, and a model that I am obsessed with, what do you think of the Datejust 36? Do you prefer the 40mm modern Datejust II models more or do you enjoy the historic and classic feel of the 36mm such as myself?

That's up to you and the size of your wrist. I have the DJ41 which I love but would feel comfortable with a DJ36 since my wrist is like 6.5". The 36 is the classic DJ and you can't go wrong with a DJ.

I went with the DJ41, I also have an 8” wrist so the 36 did not work for me. My wife has a small wrist and I was originally planning on getting her the 28 but she preferred the 36. Either DJ is

I have small wrists and wore a 114060 for 4 years. Got a 36mm datejust a few months ago and it’s perfect. It doesn’t look that much smaller than the sub on my wrists, but it’s so much lighter that when I wore it I had to make sure it hadn’t fallen off my wrists. I think the 36mm is the classic size for most people and you can’t go wrong with it. Now, will it look as good on someone with massive wrists as it looks on me? Probably not. And that’s what the 41mm is for.

The 36 wears really well. People get a bit hung up on it being a few MM smaller than the current "norm" but it's just MMs. I think the proportions of the 36MM work really well.

The 36mm is without doubt an all-time classic, made more so in part because other size options weren’t available until recent times.

My personal DJ favourite is the now discontinued DJ2. They fit my wrist size better than the 36mm does and I like the sporty aesthetic of the baton dial variants best. I have now acquired a few of these over the years in a variety of dials and metals and each one has a special place in the collection.

I prefer some bracelet to show, the 41 is all watch head on my 6.5 inch wrist.

I prefer the classic 36mm Datejust. I find that this style of watch looks better with some bracelet showing on the top of the wrist and is more elegant in this size. If I want to wear a bigger sports watch, then I wear my submariner. My wrist size is 6.5 inches and 55 mm wide.

The bezel on the DJ41 and DJ2 just looks too blown up for my taste. If I had huge wrists and a bigger budget, I would much prefer the DayDate 40, which has much better proportions than the DJ41.

I think 36 is a great size for most wrists but 41 can work too. I almost think how well you can get a watch to fit around your wrist is more important than case size, any watch is going to look clunky sliding up to your bicep

Worth remembering the DJ41 is only 39.XX mm
So only 3mm difference to the DJ36.

DJll is the larger, chunkier option.

Have got a 36 and a 41 (both on jubilee). Much prefer them to my sports models now.

36mm DJ is my daily. The proportions look perfect for me. Maybe it’s what I grew up seeing. It’s on a jubilee, so it’s super comfortable. And, comfort counts!

Agreed. The more I get into watches over the years, the more I'm appreciating a classic ~36 - 38mm size watch.

My wrist 7” and I sold my 41 on oyster ( looks too big) , I got 36 on jubilee, For me 36 better proportion, classic , but after sports models looks small.

The 36 is perfect for most people, IMO. The lugs should lay flat on your forearm and the bracelet should wrap all the way around it basically making an oval shape.

The lugs on the larger references often stick out from the arm of most people and the bracelet comes off the lugs at an abrupt angle rather than a gentle slope. In these cases (pun intended), the bracelet is more of a U shape than an 0 shape. There should be no gap between any part of the watch and your arm.

Wearing an ill-fitting watch is much like wearing an ill-fitting suit; instead of being dressy, it makes the wearer appear out of their element.

I’ve owned a 36mm DJ as my daily since 1996 until I expanded my collection during or because of the pandemic. Arguably the 36mm is more formal for dressy occasions than the 41mm which is sportier.

Same here, I sold my 41 to get the 36. No regrets. My wrist size is 6.75inch

2015, got the DJ2, kept it for 3 years, sold it.

2018 got the DJ41, kept it for 2 years, sold it.

2020, got the DJ36.

All were the same configuration, and whilst my wrist is easily large enough to facilitate any of the three, the 36mm just felt right for that design, where the others didn’t.

It is the iconic, classic size, that the DJ was always supposed to be. It was never designed to be the same size as a sports model, but has been, to facilitate the trends.

For my 6.875" wrist, it's a DJ36, all day long. Now, if it had an 8" wrist, I'd probably opt for the 41. Bottom line, I believe a DJ shouldn't be all watch head on the wrist ... just doesn't look right for this reference.

DJ41 looks more sporty, DJ36 looks more classy. I prefer and own a DJ36.
