2023 Predictions

In 1953, Rolex introduced references 6200 & 6202. 6200 is the Explorer style Sub which looks close to 124270. The modern Sub kinda sorta looks like a descendant of the 6202. That makes 2023, the 70th anniversary of the Submariner. I’m hoping for a precious metal Sub with Green or Smurf blue dial with design cues from the 6202. Or how about a 124060 like Sub with a fully graduated Red Bezel in steel or precious metal.

2023 would also be the 40th anniversary of the Coke Pepsi. But Coke may not happen because releasing new GMT model’s every year would dilute the value prop of the GMT lineup.

Daytona’s were revamped in 2016. After the DateJust, Daytona’s have the most permutations. It would be an absolute logistical nightmare to redo all those combinations in steel, yellow gold, rose gold, white gold, platinum along with dials, hands, bezel and bracelet in different sizes.

Milgauss dates back to 1954 which could be revamped in 2024. I understand they are the only lineup with the old movement but Rolex is particular about maintaining historical significance.

Again, this is pure conjecture and I could be wrong. I am simply stating what I would love Rolex to do for 2023.

Only things I can think of are:

1. All tooling for creating 40mm ceramic inserts was reworked for bicolor bezels once SD went 43 and Sub went 41. Not even sure how much reconfiguring was required there.

2. Over about 20 years, Rolex has gone from maximizing component overlap on Professional models to making each as different from the others as possible. Used to be that all but Explorer and Daytona shared same basic case shape, GMT and Explorer II were essentially identical aside from bezels. Explorer shared case w/DJ. Explorer I/II and GMT all had identical bracelets. YG was only variant for TT/PM (no RG/WG, besides Daytona).

Yep, and most of them all had the same dial size, too. That’s the Rolex I miss. It was a somewhat modular system where you just pick the features you do or don’t need. Nowadays, I see some models being referred to as “entry-level,” which is a change in that ethos.

Back when the hardest part was deciding which one in the dealer’s case you wanted to buy…

And also back when “entry level” just meant “stainless” .

Do you REALLY think the meteorite dial will go away ? I know they must be low on material and i know it will at some point....but somehow i dont think its going away just yet.

If it does... leave it to Rolex to come up with something else fun to replace it.

For some reason.... i feel like they might re-introduce the stone dials they use to
have for the day dates years ago. NOW THAT would be AMAZING !

BLNR with meteorite dial on jubilee. Could be SS or WG - I wouldn’t care, I’d buy it.

Discontinuation of the entire GMT BLRO line. Perhaps replacement by a RONR offering.

We're heading towards a heavy and massive recession. That's why rolex introduced the deep sea challenge now and didn't wait till march-april. That's why they initiated the process hike now in November and not January, to cash in the money from ppl buying for Xmas and New year. Come januari AD'S will be ghost towns. They'll just call one after another on waiting lists snd 70% will just pass on offers. The waiting lists will be squared away by june-july. Only very high high demand watches like panda and blue sky may still have a waiting time of a few months.
But gmt , air King, explorer and so on and precious metals will all be readily available. Just walk into the store and buy.
Rolex knows this, so maybe a few color schemes for 2023 but that's it.
doubt it.
