Metal Choice for a Dress Watch
Let's assume you wanted to add a white metal dress watch from a high end manufacturer (PP, VC, ALS, FPJ, AP, etc.) to your collection and the only difference was the metal of the case and the buckle/deployant. The movement, dial, hands, and strap were identical and the only difference was the metal. Would you choose platinum for $50,000, white gold for $40,000, or stainless steel for $30,000? Why? Thanks in advance.

Personally, I would go with stainless steel. In my opinion, there is so little difference in the look between steel and the white precious metals that I just don’t think the extra cost is warranted.

An old, old yellow gold watch will do.
A dress watch shouldn’t be seen. That’s why they are usually so small.

Yellow or rose gold
But thats me. White gold is fine too. Not all models are available in both platinum and white gold. Just because its platinum, it does not automatically become a dress watch

For me, YG is best, but if you like the look of stainless, just get stainless. Don't see any reason to buy platinum or WG.

When I think of a dress watch, I think of YG on a strap.

Platinum of those for that extra bit of luxury, but RG would probably be my top choice, for that combo of luxury and visual appeal.

They look different. The weight of PM is significantly noticeably different.

Although not an option, YG or RG for a dress watch.
Of the choices above, steel. The price and weight difference from steel to a white PM isn't worth the price to me.

Always PM for me. I prefer RG or YG for a dressy piece.

I agree that some WIS can discern SS, WG, Pt. visually - but only the wearer feels the weight But to the OP’s question, a dress watch isn’t defined by metal choice. Rather, it is defined by other physical attributes - dimensions, design and understated presence. IMHO, a demur Gucci quartz plated tank on a strap can be more “dress” than any automatic that dwarfs it in price, metal and size. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Depends on the watch. Time only of appropriate size ~38mm.
I have stainless platinum, tantalum and white gold dress watch and each of them are perfectly suited to the occasion. I don’t have yellow or rose gold but they are also perfect.

A dress watch should coordinate with cufflinks, belt, etc. A proper collection should have a white metal, yellow metal, and rose metal watch to coordinate with every style and occasion. Saving on stainless could enable you to get a better yellow or rose gold watch. Sent from the voices in my head and transcribed by their drinking buddy. |

I have owned all three metals. Platinum Daytona, WG Daytona, and the Hulk among other SS watches. And currently, own the Smurf in WG. If money is not an object, I recommend Platinum. Love the weight and cold shine. It does not look like SS to the wearer.
Second, I would get WG, which is almost as good and has a warmer tone than PT or SS. Last, if I was on a budget, SS. But after the PMs SS feels so light and cheap. People who own precious metal watches know what i mean. Nota bene: they all scratch about the same IMO. Everyone says SS is harder and maybe it is, but they all scratch in my experience, pretty similarly. |
