Metaphor for Life

I recently had an old buddy take his own life. Everyone is at a loss as to why. It is a situation that I admittedly don’t understand. As a former first responder, I have spent countless hours talking to folks from all walks of life; who had this final act in their mind. Some I could help, some I couldn’t. I didn’t know them, so I didn’t take it personally.

This morning dawned very gloomy and foggy outside. These three photographs show the usual view from my backyard, this morning’s view and the view from 15 minutes up the road. I guess the metaphor is, keep looking ahead. It won’t always be dark, there is sunshine and light if you seek it.

The usual:

This morning:

15 minutes up the road:

I bring this up not to be a downer. But it seems with the holidays coming fast, a lot of people start to feel some despair. Some don’t have an amazing wife and family like me and a lot of us here do. If you hear something, or see something, say something, to someone. Let’s all have a great holiday season.

We had a 7th grader take his life last week in my wife’s school district, no bullying and he was a friend to many of the teachers.
I feel for you, so very sad.

Everyone looks for an explanation. Sometimes there isn't one.

It's a song that was used in one of my kids cartoons and the words always stuck with me - "behind the clouds, the sun is shining". Your pics are a great example of that. Sorry for the loss of your friend.

Never easy, and these days its not infrequent unfortunately. That doesn't help the individuals effected. I'm sorry for your loss, and hope your fondness for him and your memories of your time together can help you get through this loss. Sorry again!

If I’m not mistaken, your view out the backdoor, and just over the rainbow, is Heavenly.

Not Heaven, but Heavenly. You and I can see through that foggy scene and know Heavenly is just over the horizon.

When it comes to his final act, acceptance is still some time away. There is pain in the confusion over his route to the hereafter. I hope it abates.

There are few words I’ve heard that are as haunting as David Byrne’s opening stanza in the live version of Heaven...

Everyone is trying
To get to the bar
The name of the bar
The bar is called Heaven

You're very close, you must have been to this area.

You're looking west at Job's Peak and Job's Sister. Heavenly, is slightly beyond these two and just to the north.

I just came across this pendant that I just had to have, it is an old mariners saying, on the front it has a skull that says: Momento Mori (Remember we all die) on the other side it reads: Momento Vivere (Remember to Live). Some times we just forget to enjoy the limited time we have here, tragically some don’t realize cloudy days will succumb to sunny days ahead.

I'm sorry for your loss. It's gut wrenching.
It's a subject I am sadly very familiar with.
You'll spend far too much time looking for answers that may never come.
Chose to remember your friend not by his final act, but the love you shared, and by the memories you will always have. I'm told it gets easier and I suppose it does. It's been 6 years for me and little by little the good memories start to work their way to the surface.

I'm sure your friend had a reason, or reasons to do what he did. Someone else's inner workings are a twilight for the others, no matter how many rainbow pictures you post.
