supra

The Supra is using the BMW drive train but that’s about it. Most everything else is different. If you were to drive the Z4 and the Supra, you’d have a totally different experience. The cars don’t handle the same, ride the same or anything else. The 4th gen Supra is the only one people have any interest in, and nobody cared until years after it was discontinued. Once the initial Supra fans get one, the hype will die down like usual. Toyota isn’t planning to produce a large number of these annually which is good for the dealers. They won’t have the expense of a lot of ground stock. They won’t be common but they be pretty easy to obtain after a year or so. Like Seth said, Toyota isn’t looking to make the Supra like the gen 4. The new Supra isn’t being marketed to the old gen four fans; it’s meant to be marketed to a younger base of people. The new market base most likely has never seen a gen 4 let alone drive one.

supra

I have one coming. Hopefully will land before the end of September.

These cars are shockingly good. The initial internet response based only on specs has made for an uphill battle.

The production numbers won’t ever be high since they’re being built by Magna Steyr in Austria - and that production line needs to build all of the Z4 cars too.

Simply not true. Maybe idiot YouTube driving channels say things like that, but I’ve been watching most everything I can find and I’m not hearing that kind of feedback based on driving.

Car and Driver and other reputable/real automotive press (no quotation marks required around press) find it to be amazing.

To be clear I don’t care if you like it, I’m not trying to convince you. However, since you’re relaying what you claim is some sweeping consensus - it’s only fair to point out that it’s way off the mark.

Perhaps you stopped paying attention when the initial (bad) opinions were circulating based only on specs? Now that people have cars to drive the review community has done a complete 180.

I can’t speak for your market/region, but in the US it’s tons cheaper than any Cayman.

Same as the OP, I’m in the U.K. Base 718 Cayman is substantially cheaper than the base Supra (£45k vs £53k) though admittedly nobody isn’t adding at least a few grand of options to the Porker. In fact the Cayman S is the same price as the Toyota over here.

Unsurprisingly we seem to be getting ripped off on the price of the Supra compared to the U.S. I just looked it up and it costs less in USD ($50k) than it does in Sterling

Cosmetically -I think the colour can make or break it.

Personally, it looks a bit soulless to me

Cool car! I can see some styling ques from the Z4 and also that Subaru BRZ. How does it feel emotionally the car. Is it very driver oriented?

I had a 94 TT Targa six speed. Sold it for $20k way back. Probably the single dumbest thing I’ve done. I’ve had two old school Celicas. I’ve had 4 or 5 4Runners.

I have almost no interest in this new Supra

That was a hot car in the early 90's. I haven't seen a new one

So far I’m loving the car. Barely have over 100 miles on it so can’t really drive it like I want to yet.

It’s a very driver oriented car, very solid (they say more rigid than the LFA and 2x as rigid as the 86).

You can tell it has a lot of power but again, I won’t take it above 4500 rpm until it’s broken in.

It absolutely gets insane attention - at least for now. Probably will wane once they become commonplace.

I wasn’t even one minute away from the dealer after picking it up and someone was yelling at me out of their car window saying how cool it was. I get a lot of people doing that.

I was at a cars and coffee thing yesterday and on my way out a guy tried to give me a card for his performance tuning shop, saying he was looking for a Supra to sponsor. I’m keeping it stock, but if I was in the market that would have been a lucky encounter.

I'll keep my beater 991. It's got over 100k miles, and I'm curious to see how much more I can put on it.

Congrats. Good looking car. I'd be all over one if it had a manual transmission option. I don't know how to drive an auto.

So I figure I should update this thread.

After taking delivery on Sept 19th, the car was driven lightly until the drivers side front lighting stopped working on Sept 30th (1.5 weeks and 299 miles from new).

I took it into the dealer one week after that because I had to go out of town the day after it broke on business.

Long story short, it has been at the dealer for 2 months and Toyota is buying the car back under lemon law. There may be a recall associated with the issue I have and it sounds like roughly 180 cars may be affected.

I’m going to get another one because it was really fun but this has been a frustrating experience...

Buy back for lighting issue? Crazy.

Found your thread on the supra forum.

I read about the seat belt issue that needed buy back.

Not to sway too much from the thread but the 981 (BS/CS) and 982 (718 Spyder/GT4) chassis and NA flat 6 is the Porsche to own. The 991/2 is a great kit but truly marketed to retirees and salt and pepper haired SVPs. Seth’s machine is on a completely different level than my BS, but I can’t praise the overall driving experience these models deliver. Its Porsche’s best chassis to date.

My experience is Toyota’s are just not as fun to drive as the counterparts... though I have not driven the new Supra, the lesson has been reinforced on several occasions.

If you drive for "fun", Gus, you are in a small minority.
The vast majority of people drive because they have to - which is why almost all motor vehicles are automatics and so many functions are being automated - including the vehicles themselves.
Most auto makers are not thinking about "fun" for most of their range - hence the explosion in SUVs, although there is usually a "fun" or performance car in their range.
For Toyota it is probably the Supra. I haven't driven it either, but I think it would probably be "fun" - at least it would be with a manual gearbox.

supra

Sorry to hear there’s a lemon recall pending on the Supra. Can’t imagine how a simple fault couldn’t be resolved without a recall but possibly the wiring loom is the issue.

As a hardtop it would be the preferred platform for that reason + speed and price. Although the Supra tail spoiler is a design drawback IMHO.

A direct comparo is at: https://www.motortrend.com/cars/toyo...mparison-test/

Wow, congrats and condolences at the same time. Sorry to hear about this.

For the original OP, I agree that Toyota is making some good looking cars/trucks/suvs. I tend to stick with German cars but will probably buy my wife a Highlander next. She drives an MB now but had Toyotas in the past and wants back in one.

I can’t speak to the Supra, but i did get four or five laps at the PC yesterday in a Z4. That’s a bad ass little car. At 6’4” the car is too small for me, but it’s wicked fun to drive.

Yeah, the Supra beat out the M2 Comp and the Cayman in a four way shootout in Car and Driver (the GT350 won).

OMG a Cayman and deal with the lackluster VW Group???

NEVER again, as the VW Group are the #1 worst auto manufacturer i have EVER dealt with. Ferrari was MUCH better than VW Group, and that says a lot imho.
