Switched to Seiko

I have several Rolexes and quite a few other high end watches. Really more than I can regularly wear. Due to the paucity of available Rolex watches at retail price, I have lost interest in acquiring more.

When I get a Jones for a new watch, I’ve been buying Seikos, mostly divers, $100-750, much less of a financial commitment.

Take a look at the Seiko forum. You can get most watches that you want easily.

I'd love to own as Pepsi GMT but I'm not a wealthy man and I'm unwilling to build a "relationship" with any AD. If I were able to buy a Pepsi at MSRP it would likely be my last Rolex. No future revenue stream for the AD. For those reasons I know my money is not good at most Rolex ADs.

I love Seiko watches, always have. My latest purchase was a Grand Seiko. My next purchase will likely be another Grand Seiko. I can walk into a Seiko store or a Grand Seiko boutique and try on most of what the brand(s) sell. My money is good with them.

It's not just that Rolex won't take my money so I'm going to settle for a Seiko product that I can actually try on and purchase the same day. I just purchased my first Grand Seiko less than a month ago and it gave me a better "high" than either of my Rolex purchases have. I was extremely stoked to buy and own it and the honeymoon period is far from over.

It’s funny, for me, part of the fun of the acquisition is the hunt. If it was easy, it wouldn’t mean as much to me.

I guess there is a reason why some want to climb mountains ... and others just want to jump on a gondola and be taken to the top. I’d rather climb.

A Seiko could never scratch my Rolex itch.

Quality of Seikos has fallen, time keeping accuracy is atrocious and hit or miss even on their higher end mechanical moments other then springdrive. Prices creeping up and not reflecting any improvement to details, accuracy or materials. Bracelets are cheap feeling and poorly designed. Many models now made in China. Customer service is a headache.

I went the opposite and ditched Seiko brand from my collection and went Rolex and haven’t looked back.

I did the exact same thing yesterday. The same amount of happiness as pieces several times the price.

If you TRULY are receiving the same amount of happiness ... then you should never purchase another high end piece. I mean, why would you if you are receiving no greater satisfaction.

I enjoy my G-Shock, Apple Watch, and Tag Heuer Monaco ... buy not as much as my coveted Rolexes.

FOMO and the desire to own the hottest watches have a very strong pull on many folks psyche. Others, not so much.

You can't argue with the value Seiko offers, they will always have a place in my collection

I agree. I don't worry about mine and rough them up pretty good, they never let me down.

In that regard (high end pieces), I have turned a corner. Side-by-side with my JLC, which is 50 times the price, I came to the realization that my philosophy for my collection has changed.

I have already loss interest in Rolex. Granted Rolex makes excellent, very reliable watches but at the end of the day, they are largely overhyped, mass-produced and soulless timepiece. I only keep my DD40 which I still love and that's it and I have sold all the rest of the SS Sports and Datejusts because I got bored with them eventually. The constant hype, price-talk among Rolex collectors and hassles AD put up to acquire popular Rolex models also doesn't help.

I have more Seikos and Grand Seikos than any other brands I collect and no, the joy when acquiring is not same as like buying a 50K AP or PP but it's a lot easier on the wallet and when comes to Grand Seiko, it easily beats out Rolex in terms of value ( not market value but intrinsic ). Take my recent Grand Seiko purchase, SBGJ235 for example, a HiBeat GrandSeiko with the Iwatu Blue dial, I will take that over any SS Rolex any time any day. The dial side finishing and detailing is just amazing and not even my photos does it any justice. Have to see it in person to appreciate.

Frankly I like Seiko, they are good watches, but at this price point I think there are so many micro brands that to me are much more interesting. I think Seiko keep repeating itself with more version of the same watch/model, and the quality and materials aren’t near more expensive watches. Grand Seiko are definitely much more interesting, but at a much higher price point.

^^THIS! I’m new to Rolex and really enjoy it. I’ve had my SKX007J for a couple years and it’s a great watch. Lorier is a micro brand using Seiko movements and they are FANTASTIC pieces. They have a new Chrono model coming after the first of the year and it looks like a winner. It’ll scratch the itch of “hard to get” as they typically sell out.

There is an argument for this. I love Seiko but their movements need to be regulated.

I think both brands have a place in my heart...

But when I learned the accuracy of the Seiko 7s26 it kind of made me realize that the Rolex 3135 is worth the money

I could understand a Grand Seiko as a suitable alternative.

I have been in the watch collecting and flipping game for almost 30 years and have as much passion for it now as I did when I started. With that said, I believe that there is a place in most collections for all types of watches. Before I became educated about brands, I was a Rolex only person and I would make strong statements about other brands as if it was an either or choice. It is not. I think a lot of watches are great for what they are at the price point. Seiko Turtles and divers are my favorite and you could have a discussion about value and function that could easily justify purchases. Don't get me wrong, I still love Rolex. It is where I started and where I will always be. I own four right now, a Platinum DD II, a YG DD II, a SD43 and the Polar Explorer II. I have great fun with them but I also own Seiko and Grand Seiko along with several other brands. I enjoy my watches for what they are, not what they are not. I also don't denigrate other member for what they want even though a lot of things are not for me. I say, 'Buy what you want. Wear it and enjoy."

It’s good know where you’re at OP.

I love a wide variety of brands for different reasons, but I always keep coming back to the crown.

I love my several Rolexes. I have nothing bad to say about the watches or any other brand. My takeaways are that I am mystified about the “shortage” of Roles SS watches availability through ADs and happy about the price/quality/availability appeal of Seikos.

Hardly. The first nice watch I received was a Rolex Datejust 36 from my parents as a high school graduation present in 1984. I have always (and only) loves Rolex.

I had that first one for 24 years.

That's a classic with a long personal history. The best kind of watch.

Though I will never part with my 16710 or 16600 everything considered there is no modern
Rolex I would choose over its Seiko counterpart.

I have the same Lorier and its a fantastic piece, great design and gives me fantastic pleasure on the wrist due to the plexiglass warping of the dial, very pretty. Great bracelet, the best micro band I have so far experienced at that price level. I use to enjoy Seiko but price and quality is going up and down in that order. I only have the Sarb035 left which is stunning at that price level. I dont think I will be buying seiko again unless I investigate and like GS
