Icon3 Restoring Vintage Grand Seiko Cases

Here's an interesting new article on restoring vintage Grand and King Seiko watch cases. Whatever you feel about original vs. restored (and I prefer the former), there's no denying this guy's outstanding craftsmanship and his dedication to zaratsu polishing.

I contacted him to do work on a couple of cases and his prices are excellent but he was booked until January 2020. He does movement servicing too. Very nice guy to email with. He sent me a video of a finished John Player case. Absolutely stunning

Thanks Adam.
A clear head, sharp eyes and steady hands at work to accomplish that work.

I did learn a new factoid about the German lapping machine’s name being transliterated into zaratsu as the Seiko term for the finishing work.

Yeah, GS actually explain that on their website, but not many people seem to notice

So I want to know if he’ll take a new seiko, for example my spb105j

And do some zaratsu on the polished bits to take it to the next level? I would be willing to bet a lot of people would do this. Because I love my spb105j to death just as is, but knowing it’s polished to Grand Seiko standards would really put it over the top for me...

Hmmm...I think I’ll contact him and see.

He told me that he will not work on diashield coated cases, but you may ask him yourself.

I‘ve had some long and elaborate emails with him yesterday as I wanted him to work on my ALS Platinum.

He frankly told me, that he would be nervous working on such an expensive piece and that his competence is working on sharp and even surfaces.

I appreciate his honesty and see it just as evidence how reasonable and good he really is.

My GS case with the chip on the lug will be sent off to him in September and I‘ll keep you updated about the outcome.
