Is my AD playing games?

Hello everyone, long time lurker, first time poster.

I wanted to give you all a summary of my AD situation.

I've been into watches for about a decade, and have slowly warmed up to the nicer timepieces and away from the more budget-friendly world. I started looking at higher end watches about the time COVID hit. I wanted to get something special for my 40th, which happened during the COVID shutdowns. Because of all the turmoil during that time, I saved my money in case company layoffs happened.

About a year ago, I decided that my company has weathered the storm and decided to spend that money I saved for that 40th birthday gift to myself. I made an inquiry at the local Rolex AD. He played the typical games that we've all seen and heard over the last few years, and put my name in for a James Cameron. I have visited a few times, about every other month, to stay on his radar. I also told him that I would want to come in for some Christmas presents for my wife. His eyes lit up and told me to come closer to Halloween so we can get that ball rolling.

Halloween comes and I go in and tell him what I want. They have something similar for one piece, but the other piece will need to be designed. That design won't be ready by Christmas due to the holiday demand, so I should buy something else as a representative of the one I wanted to get and we can make an exchange after Christmas. Cool, sounds good.

I get the rings and the wife gets them at Christmas. She understood the situation and was excited to get to the AD to work out the plan as we discussed. We get to the store and make the exchange and order the custom ring. I asked how long it should take to get it in, and I am told, "not long." It is now 2 months after my order, and still nothing. I have even texted a few times and visited once to check on it. I still haven't received any timing on the ring and when I visited, the sales rep that talked to me (my rep wasn't in that day) about my order noticed that I was waiting on a DJ41. I told him that wasn't what I wanted and he said he must have been mistaken on what he saw.

Is my AD giving me a runaround? I tried to establish a good relationship and also wanted to build on the relationship with the AD by getting things for my wife. Any thoughts or advice? I was really hoping to get my "nice" watch, but now I am getting less and less interested, mostly due to the situation. Would it be worth going to other cities? There's only one AD within 2 hours of my house, so it's not like I can check out other options on a regular basis as COVID virtually eliminated my work travel. I went to the AD in Nashville, TN and they brushed me off after finding out I didn't live there.

That's a crazy bummer since you're willing to be a good customer. Hard to believe they can't get the model right. Plus it's not like you asked for a Pepsi or Daytona. You asked for a good model to start with.

Would you be comfortable buying outside of an AD? Why don’t you call the guys at Nashville Watch. They’ll take care of you..
PM me if you want an intro.
It’s really not worth dealing with the AD in my opinion- but I understand others prefer that relationship.

I think you’ll get that watch soon. It’s not a high demand piece and 2 months isn’t really that long since the jewelry purchase. Possible they haven’t seen a JC in that time frame either.

You already made your opinion, you gave us a very biased story with opinions as well as facts.

Don't be discouraged. 2 months is a very short time, your AD probably only gets a few of that particular model in a year Stay in touch, have some patience, it will come. That model is not as widely demanded due to its size and heft, I am sure you will get the call. Wait for it and don't waste your money going the pre-owned route.

Welcome to the forum.

I’d give it some more time, that reference should become available to you eventually.

I’d say give it a few more months and make your interest knowing like you’ve been doing. If after awhile you sense things aren’t progressing, I’d go see Chase as above. I bet he can get you a mint example for less than retail

Don’t be discouraged, just yet. Not sure how they got what you wanted wrong, but I think you’ll be O.K. It took me a full year to get my first allocation, and it was a relatively hard to get OP. Since then, I’ve gotten a few more pieces. Be a bit more patient, and you’ll get that James Cameron, one way or another. Welcome to the forum.

Yeah the JC is not super hard to get. I always wanted one but had several other watches I wanted more. When I finally asked for a JC this past summer they got me one in about 6 weeks but I think it was just luck they got one in. I think most medium size dealers probably get 2-4/year. if you don't have one in 6 months I would wonder a bit but 2 months you can breathe easy.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and thanks for welcoming me.

I think my long winded post might not have been clear. I initially inquired early last year, so I’ve been waiting for almost 10 months on the watch. The 2 months is waiting in my wife’s ring that we ordered. We’ve ordered custom jewelry from other local jewelers and it never took nearly this long. Sorry to get the info jumbled up.

I don’t bother with stores that sell jewelry. Watch boutiques or forget it.

The stores in AZ are horrible. The worst being Hyde Park Jewelers. I would not waste any time there.

I'd go back in and talk to your original sales rep. Confirm that they have you down for a JC DSSD and ask where things stand.
If you feel like they're giving you the run around, put an end to it and go grey.
It's such a great watch. You'll wish you had gotten it sooner.

Just go grey and have it tomorrow for a small surcharge.

The watch journey can be fun and interesting but also frustrating when you first get started and have less information and experience. The internet myth about creating a relationship with AD's is great and in some situations it actually works. But remember, in the end, the AD's are not looking for friends, they are looking for customers. They are running a business and it is about the money and profit. They will sometimes do and say things they are not consistent with good customer service and on most watches you ask for they will lie to your face about availability and what they have. Just a fact. Every AD has watches that are put back, not for sale to you and generally off limits to the average SA and customer. Such is the game and if you are going to play just be ready to face a lot of frustration unless you are rich/famous or both. Not to say this is not a great hobby but the facts are the facts. On Rolex watches I do not play games and buy almost exclusively from our Trusted Sellers. They sell based on their reputations and customer service. And it could not be better. They also will sell to you what they have. Prices, market at best and sometimes slightly over. But they will have a discussion with you about a best price and not get offended. The best part is that once once you work a deal the watch is shipped to you the next day by lunch and you can start the ownership experience. Enjoy, learn and don't get discouraged. Your watch is out there, just go get it.

Yes, he is. Find another AD.
JC is not a hard watch to purchase and with the recent downturn and can be bought as a walk-in with a bit of luck.

It’s not a super in demand watch because of the size and weight, as others note.
You should be able to get it when they get one as you are a good customer.

I stopped playing the Ad games. The bottom line is nobody should
Have to beg , kiss butt or bundle
Things for a watch

Time is money and do not waste anymore time with AD nonsense

My
New slogan is save the grays from stress
And go gray. So many great gray dealers that will treat you with respect. Prices have softened and there could be
Tax savings going gray. Nashville watch is amazing plus oc watch guy is solid as well

This is typical with ADs but if you aren't satisfied with their service, I suggest you look for another.

Thanks. Next time I’m in Nashville, I’ll stop by. Pre-COVID, I was there almost monthly. Since then, my boss says to only go “when necessary.”

I wish it were that simple where I live. There aren’t any boutique watch stores in the area. I need to go to Chicago for the nearest boutique store.
