Datejust 36mm Size Opinions

Greetings guys. I have been eye-balling a DateJust Turn-O-Graph Z-Series. I have grown accustomed to looking down at the wrist and seeing a large watch (PAM 005, Omega PO XL...etc). I do not have exceptionally large wrists, usually have to remove two links from the bracelet of a new watch.

Looking for your opinion on the size of the Datejust on the wrist? I am going to go to the local AD and try one on, but though I like the looks of the watch, I am concerned that the DJ will look too small.

I know that this is a subjective question, but wanted to get opinions from the experts regardless. Maybe even a couple of wrist shots?

Look forward to any/all comments.

Josh

it is your lucky day..... :-)

if 36mm is too small for you, you can always try on the DateJust II (41mm)

For me 36 is too small and 40 is just right. Many, many people wear a 36 and have no problem with it.

I actually think the 36mm wears a little better than the 41mm DJ2, unless the wrist is a particularly chunky one.

Put a 36mm DJ on a 7.75" wrist and a "clock watch" on a 6.5" wrist, which one looks the sillier?

Hi Josh,

I am wearing my DD this weekend. Wrist is 7.5".
I mostly wear my 40mm's.
From some angles a 36mm does look a bit small but it feels good on my wrist and after a few hours of wearing it it just feels 'normal'.

36mm has been a fine men's size for generations. Fashion may have changed a bit for the bigger is better crowd over the last decade or so, but that doesn't make 36mm too small. My wrist (7.5+) is wide enough for a 44mm Panerai to fit fine, but a 34mm Airking or 36mm datejust look just fine. The smaller watches have a much larger relative face area, compared to the sub for example, so they appear larger than they are.
You may get a new 41mm Thunderbird this year at Basel, but be prepared to wait a while and pay a lot. (Don't forget that it may be too long for your wrist.)
Regards,

36mm is just right for me... but I do feel the pressure to get something bigger of the current trend to bigger watches making 36mm "feel" like a ladies size.

36mm is perfect. The 34mm Date sometimes seems small, but the 36mm Datejust is perfect. I am 6'1". 210#

Again, 36mm is an absolutely fine size for a watch. It will feel small when you switch over from a PAM, but you'll get used to it in no time and will grow to love it. DJ is a great daily wearer.

I typically wear 40mm but enjoy the comfort of wearing my 36mm DJ on occasion, especially w/ dress shirts.

I just got a TT DJ for christmas and needed an extra link added to fit my wrist. I think it is the perfect dress watch. I have a GMT-2c and a Breitling Superocean and do not think the 36mm DJ is too small. The DJ wears as if I have nothing on my wrist as compared to the other 2 watches. That is exactly what I want for my dress watch!!!

My first was a TT GMT in 1973, but I mostly wear my father's 1950's TT TOG. You can't go wrong with a 36mm watch. A Rolex is always masculine looking, no matter which size, and wears larger than the size. A DJ works with jeans or suit, but the sport models often a bit goofy looking with dressier shirts.

I've got two DJ's and a sub, but my favorite will always be the TOG.

For most normal people who own one watch they get from a department store when the old one breaks 36mm is a normal size for a watch. I like my 34mm Air King as much as my 36mm Day-Date as much as my 45mm Victorinox XLS-MT. They all fit just great, and it's fun to have a variety of sizes.

Size, or at least for me, is determined by wardrobe. If I wear a suit, even a 34mm watch seems to work well on my 8" wrist. For casual and short sleeve wear, 40mm is the absolute minimum and 42mm is more ideal. I owned the 36mm datejust and it was fine with long sleeve business casual to formal wear.

It used to be that a wrist watch had to be narrower and in ''proportion'' to your wrist, but this convention or 'rule' seems to have broken down in recent years. What looks and feels right to you is what matters, so do what you like/prefer. I have seen some people with watches as wide or wider than their wrists.

My opinion is that the watch design and features should be the main determinant of attraciveness (and draw attention, or not) to the watch, and not its unusual size, large or small.

Here is a 36mm on my 8 3/8" wrist. I've been wearing it for 23+ years. It looks fine on my wrist and would look great on a 7 1/2" wrist. I have to add a couple of links and move the adjustments all the way out on a Jubilee bracelet.

Remember, guys that go for really big watches on wrists that are smaller than 8" may be trying to compensate for something. Now, I'm not saying that this is true in all cases, but it's something to think about.

I am 6'4" and 200lbs. I wear the Explorer I and like how it looks (36mm).

Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder.

Try it on and you will know if it is right for you when you have it on your wrist.

Good luck with your choice.

I wear a 34mm AirKing on a daily basis, I think it looks good, but is also not so much of a "lump" on the wrist, at weekend/ going out I wear the bigger watches. I used to wear a Sub on a daily basis and enjoyed it, but after wearing the AirKing for the last 4 months, I feel a bit less weighed down.

Having said that, I miss the Sub and have put it back on the shopping list, but wont be wearing it on a daily basis.

Too small for most watches, although I'll take exception to precious metal models.

I just put on my 36mm DJ after 4 days with my 44mm PAM 312 on a ski trip. The DJ just suits the office shirt/tie scene a bit more.

but its all good...wear/buy what you feel comfortable...
