Question for New Member - Explorer II Owner

Hello All!
I am from Kansas City, MO and am the proud owner of a brand new SS Explorer II (black face). I had every intention of purchasing a Submariner w/ date, but was drawn to the Explorer II upon first trying it on. I am happy with the decision, especially since it seems everyone that I know who owns a Rolex has the Submariner.

I do have one question for the GMT or Explorer II owners here...is it possible to move the red 24-hour hand independent of the other hands? My 12-hour hand was set in the store, however the 24-hour hand does not correspond to the right time. I am going to Finland in a couple weeks and want to be able to successfuly utilize this function of my watch!

Your help is much appreciated and I look forward to interacting with you all on this forum!

Hey welcome and congrats on being smart enough to purchase the best looking Rolex available. Double bonus points for selecting the correct dial colour.

Check out this link on how to set the watch properly, and its also layed out for you in the owners manual.

Thanks for the response. I have looked at that page before, but it still does not work. It seems that my 24-hour hand does not correpsond correctly to the right 12-hour time. Could it be calibrated (sp?) incorrectly? Right now, the 12-hour time reads 11:12 AM whilst the 24-hour hand is nearly at 15.

Am I missing something? Again, your help and patience for a new owner is much appreciated!

What you can do is pull out the crown so that the quickset function is working (such that you can click the hour hand around as if its a minute hand). Simply line it up with the hour difference you want on the red hand and let her rip.

Or you could reverse it and wind all the hands around to get the red hand where you want it, then quickset the hour hand to the local time and voila!

Welcome to TRF KCCHIEF. I don't have that watch so can't be of too much help. If you are in any doubt why not take it back to the dealer and voice your thoughts.

Welcome to TRF, KC, and that's a great acquisition you have there.

Remember, the red 24-hour hand will only move when you pull the crown out to positon 3 and start to move the minute hand.

From what I understand in your post, you seem to have a QC problem. Obviously, there is some kind of mis-alignment of the hands and you should take the watch to your AD and let them check it out. Post us a picture...that would be a great help.

Good luck - JJ

Welcome to TRF< Chief.

I hate to disappoint you and contradict John, but you only have the second best Rolex there is. This is the best:

But I will say you do have a very fine watch. And in the right color.

Wear it well and enjoy it. It will do great for you on your trip to Finland. Just remember to pull out the crown to the second stop to set the hour hand. Pull it all the way out to set the red 24 hour hand. But the thing to do is to keep the 24 hour hand set to home time and quick set the hour hand to local time.

Now post some pics so we can see the real thing.

I took some pics, but they did not come out very well. I have a 4 mega-pixel digi cam but can not seem to get the quality that everyone else in this forum has. Any suggestions? I have a Casio Exilim.

I'm not the world's greatest photog, but if your camera has a macro feature, set it to that and then get as close as you can within reason while keeping a sharp picture. Generally avoid flash (the glare off the crystal kills the pic) and use a tripod.

Don't let Ed (rockrolex) make you think the GMT is a better watch, mate. He's just suffering from ExpII envy. But since we're all 'fourth hand brothers' a little rivalry is fun.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer! But seriously, I do like the GMT, but feel the Explorer II looks crisper and is more versatile than those with the black dial in terms of dress.

I initially went looking for a GMTII and ended up with the ExpII. I particularly like the semi-sloping engraved bezel as it is sporty, yet still dresses up nicely with a suit. Put it on a strap (as mine has been for over a month now) and it dresses up even more so.

No question, it's Rolex's more versatile watch.

You really can't go wrong with either the black dial EXPII or the black bezel GMTII. Both are great watches and both dress up or down nicely.

But try the GMT, Chief. You'll see what I mean about it being the better of the two.

Gee, I don't know. When I went to Wash U 45 years ago, the big sport was dumpster diving. But you didn't need to worry about water resistance then.

Are the GMT and Sub bigger than the Explorer II? I don't remember a difference but in pictures they do.

I'm not sure. I know the GMT is 40 mm. The EXP may be a tad smaller, but don't hold me to that.

The EXPII is 39mm. The Kiwi Kook will confirm this.

Welcome to TRF, great to see you jump in and start posting. The boys seem to have answered your questions well, so I will get on to the important stuff. Great replacement IMHO with Edwards, could eb a sparkplug for a team that is close already.

Not supposed to be, but that is up for debate.
