Hi everyone, first post here.

I have decided that I need a watch for diving/other watersports. I currently have a GMT-II but don't like to wear it in saltwater.

For some reason, I really like the look of orange-faced divers and am semi-set on one of those. I also like the rubber bands on them, but wouldn't be opposed to a steel band. I would like to keep it under $500 as it won't get worn very often and will likely get beat up when it does get worn (otherwise I would go for a Doxa).

I have found these two so far, but am definitely open to additional suggestions.

Tissot Men's Seastar Chronograph (Orange)

AND

Seiko Orange Monster skx781k3 200m Automatic Diver with Professional Rubber Strap

In reality, they are quite different considering the Tissot has a quartz movement and a chronograph, while the Seiko has an automatic movement.

They are similarly large at 45mm case diameter, which I like.

Water resistance for both is 200m, which much more than I would ever need.

The Tissot has a sapphire crystal vs the "hardlex" on the Seiko. Correct me if I am wrong, but sapphire is much more scratch resistant, but the hardlex is more impact resistant.

I am really just looking for a 2nd, 3rd or 4th opinion to help decide between these two and additional suggestions to consider.

If it were me, I'd go with the Seiko. I have a Black Monster and love it. I bought it on a bracelet but just got an OEM rubber strap for it and like it too.

It's tough as nails and will take anything you throw at it. The winding crown at the 4 o'clock position is very comfortable

You won't have a problem with the crystal on it either.

Seiko is only one of I think three watch companies that manufauture all of the components of their watches, even the crystals. You can't find a better value for your money anywhere

They can be had for around $130-$180 BNIB on ebay

Seiko all the way in my opinion.

I wear mine with a grey NATO strap and it's one tough mother.

The Tissot has chrono pushers which require screw down to be fully resistant to 200m and if you forget... buh-bye... plus in my opinion, does not have the hands down reputation of a Seiko OM for reliability.

Another vote for the Seiko. I had a Black Monster for a few years until I gave it to a friend. You'll be hard pressed to find a better value in an automatic watch.

I went with the Seiko and got it with the SS bracelet, but also ordered an OEM rubber strap. Thanks for the input. Now I just have to wait for it to get here...

I like the look of the Tissot and think they are an underrated brand. However if this watch is to be used in the vicinity of water i would go with the Seiko as those pushers are unlikely to be water tight.

seiko blk monster with bracelet,bought rubber oem strap for it.i like it better with the divers strap.i also have a seiko bezel protector on it as well.

i have a seiko orange and a blue monster with the ss bracelets, i bought the rubber straps for them. can't be beat for the money and you can use the lume for a flash light it is so bright.

I own a Tissot (not the model you are considering though) T-Touch
and I will never buy another Tissot.

Watch broke and as it was a gift I did not have a receipt but had all papers
dated warranty in the book and all but they said it wasnt warranty work
(the touch feature went down after 5 mths) and they wanted a couple
hundred dollars to fix the watch (a new one wouldn't have been much more)
I luckily kept complaining up the chain of supervisors till someone just wrote
the charge off but it left such a sour taste in my mouth I don't ever wear the
watch anymore but can't sell it as it was the first watch my Fiancee bought me.

Oh yeah....
The bezel protector is very cool! First I have seen.

Also the Monster is a heck of a watch!

I vote for Seiko Monster.

I have both Orange and Black.

They look great with bracelet, NATO or rubber.

Yes, the Seiko Orange monster is indeed a fantastic and very durable watch ! I have one, and in fact gave it to my father and now he loves it as well ! I'm thinking about getting the Black Monster for Christmas :)

If Orange is the key feature, then I'd go with the Orange Monster. If you are not locked into color, I'd go with a Tissot Seastar 1000 automatic. Comes in Blue, Black and Silver, w/ETA 2824-2.
