Most Rolex look like an old mans watch. Aside from the yachtmaster 2 and the submariner.

Rolex marketing and film/tv has been effective in making the Datejust the defacto retirement watch but also pigeon holed it as a reference for older generations. And for the most part, outside forums and vintage aficionados, watches that size are not viewed as modern or youthful watches.

The Datejust is an icon and a watch I would love to have. But I’m almost 50 now, and it didn’t interest me until recently.

It was Rolex marketing, but I disagree with your when and how. I was in college in the late '60s and early '70s and almost all of the Rolex ads featured the TT Datejust or the 18k gold Day-Date so obviously those were the Rolexes to buy when you became "successful". Which one you bought depended on how successful you were.

And that is what guys of my generation (baby boomers ) did. Having multiple watches or collections was an unknown concept to us so we clung to our single Rolexes. After all you can only wear one watch at a time. That is what I did with my TT DJ (for 20 years before I bought a second nice watch) and what Jack Nicklaus evidently did with his gold DD (50+ years).

So this is my theory of why the DJ and DD are perceived as "old man's" watches. Blame it on good focused marketing by Rolex in the '50s, '60s, and '70s to young up and coming professionals, including Nicklaus and Palmer, and a generation that didn't know about flipping watches.

Just an fyi to you young whipper-snappers, back in the olden days Rolexes were not considered dress watches because of their metal bracelets. However, add a little gold to the mix and you are golden hence the Two-Tone Datejust and the 18kt Gold Day-Date.

throw an "old man" datejust on a leather or oyster bracelet and it suddenly becomes "cool" again.

I showed my 30 year old son my Rolex Explorer II polar and DJ TT 18K gold, white face with Roman numerals. He chose the DJ and told me it is the best watch on my collection. So there you go, it's not only for old man but also for the millennials too.

Never thought of a DJ as an old man's watch but rather a rich or accomplished man's watch. And this was when I was in my 20's.

Only thing I would say is the jubilee bracelet does give it a more "mature" look versus the more sporty "youthful" look of the oyster bracelet.

I like how the Datejust sits quietly aloof from the more hyped models (eg. BLNR, SD50, Daytona etc) that are regularly lusted over on this forum. The Datejust is just as good quality as these gotta-have-it favourites and arguably at least as good in design terms - yet there's no waiting and agony in acquiring one.

Yes, I am biased as I own a 116234 these last few months but I'm not yet 40! My ambition is to own a Day-Date 36 in yellow gold some day - for me, the ultimate watch.

An old man is much wiser than a young man. I trust the choice of an old man.

I’m 30 and wear my grandfather’s early 1960’s datejust. It’s a great compliment to my black rose. Nothing old man about it

That is a beautiful watch. Barely any thinning of the lugs and the dial is in great shape. Defo never let that go.

Datejust II is young man's watch. DJ36 & 41 is old man's watch.

DJ 36 = Min age is 36 years to own one
DJ 41 = Min age is 41 years to own one

Old man Rolex !! I’m not believe in such a thing. Rolex is pretty much a timeless design products and goes well with anybody who wore it.

I would think any young-ish guy wearing this would know his stuff! A certain sophisticated, understated, cool with a side dish of "amazing" and "I know what's up".

First owned one when in my mid 30’s.
Now thinking of the 41mm Everose, chocolate diamond dial as a retirement present to self later this year.
BUT, I guess as I approach 60, in my case, the one I end up buying will in fact be a watch for an old man.
