Brand new datejust 36 issue
Guys, am new to rolex and has just bought a brand new datejust off the AD. I came back home and took out of box. Watch was dead and i wound around 20 times and still the watch didnt started ticking just like my seiko or eta automatic. I had to move /tickle the watch to make it start. I let the power run down and then tried again, still the same. Example in my seiko i wind the crown 3-4 times and it starts ticking while this datejust takes atleast 30 + windings to start. Is this normal? If not what should i do? I have spent a lot to satiafy my desire and this makes me a bit nervous. Thanks guys

Totally normal. My Sub won't start moving until 20 turns. Even the manual says to give it at least 20 turns for a partial wind. And considering a "turn" isn't a set measurement, it can vary depending on who's doing it. A full wind is roughly 40 turns. Do that, put it on, and enjoy.

Agree with those above, just wound my two modern subs this am from dead. Both took 20 plus winds to get things moving.

As a counterpoint, my Omega 8400 movement will start moving after just a few turns, or sometimes just from being picked up. Rolex is different. Comparing movements from different manufacturers doesn't tell you anything.

I usually have to give mine a small tap to get it moving after running it down and letting it sit. I had the same concerns initially, but members here let me know it was no big deal.

If mine go dead, the second hand doesnt start moving until around 20-30 turns of the crown. I usually then give it at least another 20 turns before I set the time.

Despite the fact that you have to wind it with 25 turns as a minimum it is possible that you have to move it to see the second hand start. ( i mean like shake it a bit ).

Give it a shake and the second hand will start moving, then give it 20 winds and wear it. If you wear it for 6 - 8 hours it will be fully wound...you’ll then get the full power reserve.

After a time set my 1991 EXll requires a 'spanking' to start moving again so this is not a new phenomenon.

I joined TRF just to get this question answered.....and you all came through. I believe the issue is that all of the documentation that comes with the watch says 20 turns. Again and again, 20 turns, 20 turns, 20 turns. It clearly takes more than that...like 40. Personally, I think the included documentation should be updated to say 40 turns.

I have three Rolex from new and they all behave the same.Six of my turns will get the second hand moving. Now my turn is rolling the crown from my thumb tip to the first joint seam on that digit. Easily 3+ turns of the crown for each spin so 20 sounds about right.

Over the years I've owned at least 12 Rolexes and all of them would start running in about 5 turns or so. To wind them to their full reserve, yes, at least 40 turns. I don't recall that any of them had to be tapped, shaken, etc. to start either. Maybe I was just lucky.

Thank you everyone. Its amazing go get the instant support and share of knowledge and experience. I tried it again! lol.. drained the power, started counting the windings and exactly at 20th full turn [not half] the second hand started ticking. A question, with rolex officially saying 40 turns, does that means 40 full turns? normally when we turn we only turn 1 full in two halves. thanks.
