Breitling Emergency - slightly off topic

Was looking in the Rolex window at Maapin and Webb St Anns Square Manchester today and in the display beneath was a Breitling Emergency at half price.....just over £2k

A real bargain if that's the watch you want......rumour is they are discontinuing the model but to some it is a cult watch

An UK member that wants me to go in tomorrow and put a deposit down for them just PM me

Arrrgh! Tempting!

I want one for when I hit the hills but I've just committed to a big purchase and tied up all my free cash!

Just out of interest, what colour was the dial...?

Very good of you to bring it to everyones attention, even if I am now literally banging my head off the table!

Man that is tempting, nearly bought an aerospace before.

I just know I'd pull that antenna thing out when I'm hammered cos I'm such a fiddler.

Wow that is a great find.

I've always been tempted but couldn't get over the fact that it's WR is only 3 bar. You'd think if you were going to have to use it for survival purposes, they'd at least give it a 100m WR.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but generally 3 bar isn't even suitable for swimming.

I think the concept is great. Too bad about the rumors. I hope it isn't true.

Cool watch.

I had a white dial for a bit but that antenna was tempting my friends.
If I remember correctly, you get a pretty significant fine if you deploy the antenna for no particular reason. Then of course you have to send it in to Breitling to be reset.
I have a feeling this thread will be moved shortly to the non Rolex forum....

Not a cunning plan!

I know exactly what you mean, though, that's why I'd only wear one climbing...NEVER on a 'sesh'!!!

$15,000 fine for non-emergency last I heard. Pretty sweet concept though, wouldn't mind getting me hands on one

Can any other watch actually claim that it had saved lives?

And I'm not talking about Bonds laser cutting seamaster

Can the Emergency claim that? AFAIK there weren't many documented success stories so far. Which is kinda normal, considering the easy math on "what's the chance you wear an Emergency _and_ have a plane crash _and_ you survive the crash". Of course, the Emergency can get handy in other life threatening situations too, but I wouldn't buy an Emergency just for that feature. Unless you wanna be one of the thousands of people who never used it and never will

I'd feel a lot happier climbing alone with one. Sure, technically it's only for use in aviation emergencies, but I like the idea of a transmitter ATTACHED to me rather than in my bergen where I could potentially be separated from it.
There's a lot of talk of the frequency it uses being replaced for aviation distress calls but I figure if my Long Haired General had enough info of my rough location she could tell Search and Rescue to tune to that frequency to find me.

If I do get one I do hope I WILL be one of the ones not to use it though!

I saw once that the singer of Korn (Jonathan Davis) was wearing one.. Just to add to the coolness factor of the watch..

Richard Branson wears one.

The late Steve Fosset wore one too, if memory serves.

Brian Williams has one too...

Emergency

I've had an Emergency for about 4 years now - which is a LONG time for me - I've always been a serious flipper! I'll NEVER part with this one...

I love mine and wear it pretty much daily - especially if I'm flying. I was initially a bit concerned about the yellow face, but it really grew on me quickly - the watch always draws attention!! The country I fly over is unbelievably gorgeous, but pretty brutal and unforgiving - especially in the winter months...

The rumor about the frequency change is true, but not as significant as some are led to believe. The "Emergency" transmits on 121.5, which will still be used for honing into the crash site, and will always be the frequency pilots monitor, while enroute in remote areas. The new ELT's (Emergency Locator Transmitters), transmit on 406, and is a satellite based monitoring system. When the ELT is activated, the satellites receive the signal and notify the center of the crash and GPS location. When the rescue crew/search team arrives to the general area, 121.5 will still be monitored to hone in to the crash, if it's not immediately visible.

If you like the Emergency, then you should go for it...It wears great and is super light-weight. You almost don't even know it's there...I had a DeepSea for a while, and while the Emergency is close to the same size, it wears MUCH smaller than the DeepSea.

The antenna is a completely different issue altogether - This is one watch that I would never take off and hand to someone while drinking heavily When you get the watch, you sign a form which states your responsibility for the transmitter...If I remember correctly the fine in $10,000.00 and Breitling won't replace the transmitter if it's not utilized during a true emergency

I can't remember what the water resistance is...My manual is at the office, so I'll check tomorrow...I think it was decent though...

Here are a few photos of the watch and the Alaska flying environment...

Hey Sonny, spectacular scenery and great looking plane too.

I think the Emergency fits the true definition of a Tool watch. if you ever need it, about as handy as you can get. Better than a Swiss army knife!

Thanks...The beautiful scenery is endless up here!!

The plane is a blast to fly, and I was very fortunate to get to take delivery of it, new at the factory!! You don't see too many new planes up here...Most of them are heavily abused, wear some duct-tape, and smell like fish guts!!

You're right in saying the Emergency is a great tool watch...I think it sometimes gets a bad wrap for being gimmicky - especially since it's spendy and most of them aren't worn off the beaten path very much.

I do feel better having it on...A lot of plane crashes happen up here, and often the survivors get out w/only what they have on their body...If I get out of the wreckage and don't have my left arm, it WILL be a REALLY bad day!!

Hello, I am not a frequent poster on this sub forum, but the Rolex forum is a little slow today. I love my Breitling Emergency. I just got the tech data from my safe:
Water resistance of transmitter: 3 ATM / 30 m. I could be wrong, but 30 meters is plenty deep; it's not designed for diving.

Is Breitling missing trick, not making a diving version? ever seen the film open water?

the fear of going diving then surfacing and boat not being there plays on my mind, dont trust thai dive boats, leaving me and my buddy in the water....currents can take you off ect...nice to know you could pull the pin

Love the Emergency and I believe we could safely state the speedmaster saved at least three lives on Apollo 13 when they needed an exact burn time when all the computer timers were down.

I actually DID buy the Aerospace, and the reason I cannot own the Emergency is perfectly described by you in the latter part of your post.

Ha Ha, I think they have a policy of keeping him out of harms way, so he will be exempt from that rescue

Yes... Informing a six foot three Scotsman, brimfull of ale and 'armed' with a watch the size of the Emergency, that he would have to be reported for misuse of an Aviation Distress Frequency and could be liable for a £10000 pound fine might make The Palace wish they'd sent Wills to "The 'Stan" after all!!!
