I was just talking to my wife about this tonight ... Although I have 4 at the moment, I’d like to get myself down to 2 pieces at some point.

I’ve got 2 now and I don’t think it’s even close, strong no IMO... Sub/DaytonaC
I think 5 is the minimum to be considered a collection, but YMMV. I’ve looked at my perfect 5, so I’d need to add 3: 1675, 116655, 228239 Prob like to add an Omega in while building the above, and maybe down the road as a final purchase a PP 5726, hopefully for my 50th birthday or something. That would be my personal definition of a collection. I also have a Tag Calibre 16 on a rubber strap, but that’s just a beater that rarely see the wrist, so I don’t even consider it part of the collection at this point. |

This is an excellent question. Personally I think it can. I don't think a collection is a number but rather a state of mind. It must be thoughtful and carefully curated. For example I don't think that someone who owns a dozen watches that have very little to do with each other is a collection, it's just someone who likes to have a lot of watches. But if you have a couple of GMT's well that's a collection, or at least the start of one. I think a collection ought to be focus and purposeful. I am sure lot's of people will disagree...

Two is the minimum for a collection. No other number has any rational merit.
It’s one guy’s opinion versus another’s how many make a proper collection, but IMO, more than one means you are collecting watches. Hence, two is a collection. |

I think that two articles can be a collection, depending on what you are collecting.
I know that a lot of people consider me to be a watch collector, because I have a bunch of watches and know a lot about watches, but because of the extent of my knowledge, I know that in the world of collecting watches, I have little more than an accumulation that includes a few nice pieces. It's all relative. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collecting

No... But it can be a rotation and that’s all that matters!

I think 'collection' would be a very generous term for two of anything.

I would like it to be, but no. I think at least 3 constitutes a collection.

I consider 20 a small collection.
10 to 20 possibly a beginner collection if still looking for items to add to your collection. 5 to 10 I would say the person is an "enthusiast". Under 5 an "interest". |

I think yes, but 3 would be better to say "collection."

For the first time in a long time I’m questioning my collection (4xRolex & Seiko) as I just can’t see past my SD , so two watches would be the sensible amount right guys I wish I was sensible .

Currently have 4 in my ‘collection’
1. Dress watch on leather 2. By daily beater for 9 years (first auto watch) 3. A smart evening watch 4. My Rolex, which to be fair covers all the above now lol

3 is just an "interest".
4 is the start of a collection. I would expect a "collection" of anything to have a minimum of 4 items. I have 3 quality watches. I would never introduce it to someone as a "collection".

Tbh if you say I have two Rolex’s to most people they would class you as a collector. I only have one diver ( dssd sd sub date sub no date) in my friends n family’s eyes never asked or explained.

If someone has two Rolexes (or something comparable), then they have more money tied up in watches than a lot of people have in their car. It’s also more than the disposable income that many families have for an entire year.
So I’m going with yes, you’re a collector if you have two Rolexes. |

The number, is all a matter of perspective.
For instance, two baseball cards or two stamps, isn't much at all. However, two ex-wives is more than anyone needs.

Yes. I went for a number of years wearing either a SS Submariner or a YG Daytona. Was always happy to wear either and did not have any thoughts about another. How things change.
