I recently picked up a Nike Apple Series 3 with Cellular. I never considered the Apple Watch until autonomous cellular and texting capability existed. A few quick takeaways early into my ownership:
Pros: 1) Not taking my phone and potentially wallet, ipod, etc. to various places is liberating. 2) My company provides me with an iphone, therefore, I often need to lug around two cell phones. During the work week, having just one phone in my pocket or on me is far more practical. 3) Nike running app has been great - tracking my runs has been fun. It picked up my runs from my Fuel Band (years ago) too! Overall, a great runner's watch. GPS, streaming Apple Music, Apple Pay, texting calls, etc. 4) Phone calls are just as good as with the phone, people can hear me and I can hear them perfectly. Cons: 1) Daily charging. 2) Cellular connection is not always great. Many of my texts and calls have not initially gone through. 3) It is a tiny phone on your wist, potentially more distracting than a regular phone while driving or doing various activities, meetings, etc. 4) Everybody has an Apple Watch, not enough variations or differentiation. I was recently in Miami and I was so glad to have left my Apple Watch at home. I hate the ubiquity. 5) It is a gadget that doesn't feel particularly special or nice. Overall as a 'watch' guy: The Apple Watch is nowhere near touching Rolex or any fine Swiss brand as a replacement. Wearing a Rolex these past few days on vacation, I didn't need to worry about charging, I forgot about the texting and cellular capability...and at a point, I felt the Apple Watch with Cellular is superfluous for my needs. Unless you are a runner/need a workout watch or would like to leave your cell phone behind, I would not recommend the Nike Apple Series 3 with Cellular. It works for me, I see it as more of a threat to the the iPhone because for me, when I am leaving the house, it is either the watch or the phone, never both. As the weather warms up, I am looking forward to longer runs with the Apple Watch. |

Spartacus,
My many years of experience with wrist-phone-computer devices.... ATT was lackluster with the Samsung whereas Verizon is a bit better (messaging, reception, etc). Apple does have bad battery life as compared to the Samsung Frontier. Also, the Frontier looks like a watch, and a mere $15 matching metal bracelet works great visually, they even have one that fills the gap between the pins and the case (read: no awkward empty space between band and watch case). All in all, imho you really need working 4G/cell for watches to become a great device. JMHO and have been wearing these things daily for the past 5 years or so.
