The quartz revolution hit the machanical watch industry hard in the 1970's.
Luxury watches are still here so if they could survive it then I'm sure they can survive it now.
Let's be honest, whether we like it or not to most 'Rolex' is a world wide status symbol and has little to do with wanting to tell the time .
An iPhone will do that far more accurately than any PM Daytona ever will.
People like luxury goods, always have, always will.
Why else would we spend multiple $000's on something that a cheap plastic Casio can do better?

The quartz watches, however, were never as functional BEYOND telling time like an Apple Watch is nowadays

Seriously though, I take your point that an Apple watch is more of a multi media tool & not just a time piece.
However as these 'Millenials' careers progress and some start entering the boardrooms I think a nice Daydate will stand out nicely amongst a sea of plastic iwatches.

When I was 21 when I brought a Breitling. Then it went from there, studying other watches and learning more about the mechanisms etc. It’s just been something that’s grabbed my attention and am
Very interested in.

It’s when I start noticing what make and model someone is wearing from about 10m away I wonder if I have a problem

All my fellow geezers encouraging Millenials to buy Rolexes will just increase the scarcity. Let them be happy with iWatches. More Rolex sports watches for us seniors to enjoy.

I'm 56. My eldest son, 24, would wear a Rolex in a New York minute if he could afford one. It has zero to do with an appreciation of the mechanics. It's strictly a status symbol to him.

Born in 1983 so I reckon that makes me a millennial. My next watch will be a Speedy Pro with hesalite crystal. I really like that moon watch! Here's a pic of my current lineup:

Born in 1987.
I started wearing watches since I was about 6 years old. First the children's quartz watches, then regular quartz watches until the point where my father received his first mechanical watch, a Rolex.
It all went downhill from there on. I started with a Tissot, moved up to a Meistersinger, then a Zenith and I now just recently bought my first Rolex.
And always looking at what could be next

Hate what a millennial represents - though I am clumped into this cohort by my birth year.

Born in 1983.

Have worked my entire life thus far since high school.
Was taught the Golden Rule - do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Understand the value of a dollar and what it takes to make it.
Have never expected a promotion rather worked for it and earned it.
Have never accepted a 'participation award' - only the winner gets the trophy.
When I was younger if I got bullied we had a fight and usually became friends afterwards.
Tired of political correctness.

Watches:
Rolex 216570
Rolex 16750
Rolex 114060
Rolex BLNR
Breitling Emergency
Omega Seamaster Pro
A good number of Swatches
A bag full of vintage watches I need to get around to getting serviced etc.

Personally for me a watch was never about the name or panache. My love of watches always came from the history and significance of the piece. James Bond wore a Submariner. Steve McQueen wore a Submariner. My father wore a datejust. Need I say more? My style has typically been that though - timeless and classic.

I enjoy what goes into wearing a mechanical watch. Even the act of setting the time is a conscious effort we make in recording/remembering the time.

I have considered a smart watch - just not sure I would get the same satisfaction out of wearing it.

I was born in '93, so I'm technically a millenial. I own an Explorer 214270 Mk1, a Seiko Turtle, and in the future I'm hoping my dad will give me my grandfather's YG Vacheron Constantin ref. 7592.

Suffice it to say I love mechanical watches, and have several friends who do as well

Millennial here too. I've had Tags, Omegas, Breitlings, IWCs, Panerais but have settled on collecting APs and Rolex for now.

The issue w the smartwatches is that once you start wearing and getting used to one, you sort of feel naked when your phone rings and your wrist doesn’t vibrate. Lol. In other words, it is pretty addictive, IMO, but I will never give up my Rolex and wear them as well.

I’m 27 and I hate being apart of the millennial conversation. I feel I was born in the wrong decade as I am the complete opposite of most millennials. I have worn mechanical watches for years and refuse to wear a smart watch.

35 here.

I've always been an early adopter when it comes to tech.

From my very first Timex, I always loved watches as well.

When the first android wear smartwatch came out, I pre-ordered and couldn't wait. Perfect combination for me.

Or at least that's what I thought. Sold it after about 6 months.

Mechanical always or even quartz on occasion for me.

Many younger people have a distaste for Rolex etc because it’s very out of reach realistically.

In LA area, a house in a neighborhood that you might not get shot in is over a million. Getting a Ford Explorer with power locks and windows is 40k. The struggle is real, so when life is difficult it can make people sour about high end goods.

Also a typical 30 year old is making the same amount as someone did in the 80’s..........except in the 80’s a million got you a bad ass spread in Beverly Hills and 40k could get you a Turbo 911 in the garage of your mansion.
