That leaves 1996-2000 birth years unaccounted for?

Gen X. I think what’s more important is how your parents behaved / parented though. I was in the “spare the rod and spoil the child” generation.

The problem with these "generation" categories is that they are so long they don't take into account vastly different cultural/world views at each end.
For instance, the above breakdown classifies both those born in 1946 and 1964 as "Baby Boomers" so when JFK was assassinated in '63 the former was almost an adult.. 17 years old...while the latter wasn't even born yet. In 1968 the former may have been a 22 year-old G.I. fighting in the middle of the Tet Offensive while the latter was a 4-year old at home playing with Lincoln Logs and eating paste. In '69, being 24, the former well-remembers men first leaving earth to walk on the moon, while the latter 5 year-old's world is rocked by leaving home to attend kindergarten. In 1978 when the latter 14 year-old, 9th grader was blowing all his allowance or quarters earned mowing lawns down at the mall arcade or bowling alley playing Space Invaders because he's still years away from having a clear complexion or driver's license when the real fun begins, the former is 32 years old with a wife, mortgage, and kids of his own that are already in 2nd or 3rd grade. In '81 the 17 year-old becomes glued to MTV while the former 35 year-old is already waxing nostalgic about Woodstock in '69 which to the latter is something for the history books, not something in their scope of awareness when they were 5 years old. So while these generational categories may be convenient, they don't really offer a good breakdown of common outlook and world view. Plus, with an 18-year spread, since you can conceivably have those born in '46 having babies in '64 (or even before), but illogically classify those 2 different, actual generations as being of the same "generation". |

Perhaps pre 20th century it may have made more sense trying to quantify groups this way, but the technological and cultural changes that move so rapidly even from the 1950s on makes the categories meaningless. I get that the boomers were more described as a population and urbanization spurt, more than a cultural group-think but the ones that followed seem far too arbitrary. Also catagorizing things like the 60s or the 70s is not really applicable because I’d argue the 60s were more like 1965-75. |
