Does a new Breitling depreciate fast?

Just wondering does a new Breitling depreciate a lot more than a Rolex?

Yes, Rolex is cash. Breitling does OK, but will take a fairly big hit in resale value. Most watches other than Rolex and Breitling are niche products and take big hits in the resale market. The key is to get the Breitling at a good discount up front. I have done fairly well on resale of many Breitlings only because I can get almost 40% off new from a local AD, so I can resell for more than gray market dealers.

Assuming you pay retail (or close to it) from an AD, you're going to take a bath trying to sell it used...even if it is BNIB. I wouldn't recommend buying any Breitling new UNLESS either 1) You plan to keep it for a long, long time or 2) $ is no object. I love many Breitling models, but don't like the quick 30-50% depreciation of the brand (much like Omega) right out the gate. Cheers.

It starts to depreciate from the mere vibes you send towards it even before plonking down a single cent on the counter!!

it depreciates like crazy, i've never come across any breitling that has ever really appreciated in value......but i wouldnt compare it to an omega.....atleast in South East/South Asia, an Omega may not hold as much value as a Rolex, but its still up there in the upper cut...breitlings...take a bit of a nose dive in value.....get it if you love it...i like them, but for that kind of price.....there are a few more brands and watches that sing a little louder to me...

Oh yes... I bought one in a sale.. 50% off, I sold it later.. Got my money back, had I paid retail, I would of cried. Talked to a friend, he has lots of breitlings, his ad always gives him 30-40% discount.

Plus parts and servicing are way more expensive than Rolex, (just check the price of leather straps) and you don't get the 'comes back like new' thats the Rolex default.

NEVER buy Breitling from an AD unless he cuts the price in half
OR you love it, its limited and you want it for the rest of your life.

You can find gray market dealers selling them for at least 1/2 price
(usually last years model but big deal unless you want a model that just
came out and if so wait a year or still go gray just dont save as much)

If you are looking at a Breitling Id contact Mosco here on the boards
He has access to quite a few brands and has really given some members
here great deals from what I have heard. I can tell you he really knows
his watches and is always willing to talk and help you pick what you want
(even if its not from him)

It's going up again this week i have heard so i am now selling it.
You also have to make sure the one you buy is a really desirable model or else

Never buy a Breit period.
They are mid priced watches, not collectables.

Breit is like a BMW 318, almost a real Bimmer.

Oh really???
Hmm, I have a Gen II Navitimer and it cost a couple hundred if that when it was bought in the early 60's.... double it and add a zero to it... Seems like a pretty good ROI for something that was bought to wear and use when flying.

Ignorance little boy..... Don't speak of what you don't know.

The majority of new Breitlings are not collectible BUT they do still make some limited edition ones which do become quite collectible and lets see how you feel about their watches if you are lost in the woods or something and have their watch which transmits an emergency signal....

Sounds like a statement of fact and not just your own rather simplistic opinion.

To the OP, a Navitimer SS bought second user will hold its money as well as many Rolex SS models.

A classic watch with plenty of heritage.

Not being a snob, I've been through many watches like omega's and tags etc... never having the will to get the more worthwhile ones.... but eventually after spending quite a bit, you get one nice one, then you hardly look back. Then you ask yourself, why didn't I just save up and get a nice one since the beginning.

That's the same for all hobbies right?

That makes sense, but perhaps it is your delivery?

Greg, all brands make something that clicks with some people.

I just never find breit attractive at all. calm down.

Why do you wear a nice watch, to get some attention... I'd never compliment anyone wearing a breit or a tag or an omega, or a cartier or a chanel or graham,.... high quality watches... fashionable.... there are tonnes of these watches in mags...

but a nice some VC, some PP, some AP's, some Pam's.... will catch my attention... notice I said some...

Why would you be lost in the woods? that's funny.

I personally would not buy one. I have seen some nice ones but they just do not do it for me. The majority do appear to take a hit on the secondary market. I would not buy one as an investment but if you like it then I would.

Dude, I AM calm. Stop being a condescending prick.

Now, your statement about why YOU wear a nice watch explains it all. The difference between a show-boat and a WIS is that YOU wear the watch to get attention, and we couldn't care less about drawing an eye to our wrist, other than our own. I wear my watch because it is a piece of precision engineering wrapped in art. It makes ME happy.

Sounds to me like you worry about others' opinions a bit too much. Why don't you run a hot bath, light up some candles, and appreciate yourself for once.

Time out with the heated stuff on this thread please.

The 5980 guy dropped a bollock with the tone of his thread but let's just put it down to forum acclimatisation.

I recently saw a buddies limited edition Avenger or something and it had a good look feel to it. He also has one called moon something. It appears to be quality just not my style. To me it is hard to compare apples to oranges. I think Mercedes or BMW makes a great car but they depreciate greatly. It would be unfair to compare it to a Ferrari. In the past I did not care for Rolex but recently 2 daytonas, 3 millies and 1 DSSD later my mind changed somewhat. I am always at a loss when someone says nice car or nice watch. It is just a watch or car. I just buy what I like and never worry about what others think or flipping.

"Mid Priced"...that statement is laughable & makes no sense. It's all relative...what is mid-priced to one might be expensive (or cheap) to others. I have multiple friends that could afford APs and up, yet could care less about watches and therefore wouldn't even think about spending more than a few hundred on a piece. If I told them they could buy a Breitling for a $2K-$5K they sure as heck wouldn't classify it as 'mid', they would laugh and say it's ridiculously priced. Then there's one of the principles of the firm I use to work at...I know for a fact one of the watches he sported at the office was in excess of $150K, and his 'daily wearers' all started around $30-50K. I guarantee he wouldn't call Breitlings 'mid' but instead 'starter watches' for his teenagers (spoiled as they are). It's all relative.

That said, the price point shouldn't matter on a watch IMO and wonder why anyone would eliminate a brand because of that...kind of makes me scratch my head as to why some are really motivated to buy certain watches.

I've owned a lot that cost more than this Blacksteel, but you know what, it was one of my favorites. It would still be in the collection if it wasn't for the fact that I promised my wife it would be sold if I bought a DS. Oh well...

I had the regular Skyland Avenger and sold it. No complaints at all with the quality of the watch but I did lose a lot on the resale. But then again, I really didn't think about it as an investment but just a watch.

I think Breitling makes very good watches at nice price points.

If you are going to get a Breitling brand new- be sure to push on a good discount. I got 40% off an Emergency. Wasn't impressed with it though. Sold it & got a Yacht Master.

I love my Breitlings. They're certainly not entry or mid priced watches...

that being said, I purchased mine at a 38% discount new. And my Starliner, purchased in 06, sells used for a bit more than I paid for it.

Sold my few months old Omega about 50% off what I paid at AD (even I got like 15% off from listed price).

I read somewhere that AP suffers that problem, is it true or hearsay?
