Advice on buying 1970s Datejust

Hey everyone. A friend of mine is selling a 1970s Datejust. I believe it is a 1974. Before I pull the trigger on it I wanted to post a photo of it here to make sure everything looks okay with it. This is my first Rolex so I wanted a few opinions on the watch first to make sure I'm not missing something that isn't right with it. He's asking $2,000 and I was going to offer $1,800 if all looks good. I wish I had more photos but attached is the photo I do have. Thanks for any advice and info!

Is the coronet gold on the dial? It could be the reflection but looks silver from here. Otherwise looks pretty standard, if the coroner is gold then correct config for a 1601 by my eye. Case looks like it’s in reasonable condition, someone has ham-fisted change straps/bracelets. Have you got pictures of the engravings between the lugs or the moment? Looks like there’s been a slight amount of moisture in the case.

Looks legit to me. Condition issues are obvious, but baked into the price IMO.

Case needs a polish badly. The gold bezel still looks like it has sharp edges and all of the lume is intact. If you can get it for $1800 then it will be a great deal. Send it in for a service and a polish (Not to Rolex) and you will have a really nice piece.

$1800 more than fair price for the condition.

I'm inclined to agree, tho I'm no expert. For an almost 50 year old piece, And, if that cornet on the face is gold, that, could/would be my deciding factor. But I'd be inclined to do it. Maybe the hands can be cleaned too, during a service..?!? You'll need a strap or bracelet as well. Another expenditure to factor in, presuming that's ' head' only.

Great deal at 1800! Sharp fluted bezel, dial pretty crisp and not overly polished lugs...!

If it runs and is keeping decent time, it's great deal at $1800. And still a good buy at 2k. Welcome to the club.

Why does it need one badly? I don't think it needs one.

Looks like a caveman took a chisel to the top of the lugs

Barely noticeable, plus it's 40-50 years old.

I would say its more than noticeable if it was the first thing my eyes picked up on in the pic.

That's what happens with a 50 -/+ yr old watch. It's called 'character'.

If the OP is OK with some big dings on the lugs then more power to him. I personally would get it polished but I guess that’s just me.

Oh I would clean it up a bit for sure..and I agree about those decent sized dings on the lugs, but to buff them out you could loose a fair bit of lug material I suspect.
Not being in the trade, does one 'fill' and buff. ??

Some quick laser welding and those lugs would look brand new

Its a good deal. Watch looks ok and the price is right. A service and a light polish will make this puppy a head turner!

Go for it! I have a 1972 ref. 1601 and paid a bit more for that when I snagged it some years back.

Does it run? Does it keep okay time? Yes and yes = snag it!
