Dear all,

I recently saw a watch described as a Rolex Ref. 5514 on sale (no Comex Logo/scripture but helium escape valve): http://www.chrono24.co.uk/rolex/subm...GB&SETCURR=GBP

As I have absolutely no experience with this model, does anyone of you have seen/handled such a Ref. and can give some insight on what to look out for? From what I have read so far there have been a limited number of 5513/5514 without Comex logos but identification is difficult.

Dial looks correct.

Though precomex still had caseback engravings ?

From what I understand, the 5513 "Pre Comex" stopped around 73' so without the serial number it seems a bit off to me. As George stated, I thought they had the engraved back as well. As far as pricing, it works out to about $15k USD. I could certainly be wrong but I would think the price to be low for it??? Ive seen them about $10-$15k higher in the past year or so.

Wait for Haywood to comment. He's knows these pieces better than most. Not sure about lack of fixed spring-bars and price seems cheap

the term pre comex has absolutely nothing to do with comex or a 5514.

the term pre comex relates to a style of dial used on civilian watches that had the same crown font as the comex logo dial.

there have been a number of non issued 5514 watch mid cases appear over the years ..possibly left over service cases, but they haven't been issued to comex which is what makes it a comex watch.

so at best from the information proved its a model 5514 case...but it isn't a comex.

A 5514 shouldn't have fixed spring bars and the price doesn't seem cheap to me!

Such watches have turned up but I don't think there is a consensus over provenance or value. I would agree with Jed that it's not what we would normally consider a "Comex" watch, of course.

Interesting, but not a watch I would buy or recommend at any price without some gaps being filled in.
