Patek Philippe or AP?
Hi Folks here,
This is my first post here, but I learned some great knowledge from you guys through the past three years with non-registration on the forum. The reason I am posting this thread is I am getting totally lost in picking my engagement gift. I went to two local watch ADs and tried on several APs and PPs on my wrist, but I just can't make my mind. The Main factors I am concerning on watches are: 1. design 2. movement 3. future value and current I am looking at PP 5980 1AR 001 & 5711/1R 001 for PP. For AP I am looking at 26331 1220OR.01 or 15400OR. As this is my first watch above 40k, I just want you guys could give me some suggestions for the purchase. Any input is welcome. Thanks again guys. |

Go with your gut. I went AP then PP and love both.

Next to impossible question to answer, but unfortuantely, I've found that getting a PP when you love both, doesn't really scratch your itch for the AP, and vice versa. One potential compromise is maybe to just go with two steel ones.

Welcome to the forum.
Of the three criteria you listed in the price range, (1) and (2) are subjective while (3)...nobody can really foretell although selected models holds better value due to their popularity. As you mentioned this is your first watch above 40K and since you are asking for advice, I presume should be quite a significant bit of money for you to spend, so go with what makes you happy the most. You can tell if the watch is really the one you want if the watch really sings to you, that is, you should have that strong "yearning" to get the watch and want to own it asap when you put it on. But if the feeling you got is only "hey, this is very nice" and that's all, then don't or you may have buyer's remorse later. I lean towards AP but both brands have some excellent choices and some of them are already listed by you. I will add a AP 15202 Jumbo RG to the mix. Hope this helps.

Given the choice, PP.

Of those I went for the 5711/1R, beautiful, smooth and elegant. At this level you just have to go with your heart, absolutely no losers here... well maybe the PP TT.

Both brands make great watches. I have owned both, but do not currently own an AP. Right now I am much more interested in Patek, as I have been somewhat discouraged by AP secondary values as well as what to me seem like the consistent re-issuing of pieces.
Again, this is all personal opinion and is certainly exasperated by my love of RM. Either way, you can't go wrong and need to make your own choice!

The AR has a beautiful dial but 2 tone traditionally doesn't sell so easy pass IMO. 5711R is a great watch. Personally I would get on a list for 5711 SS Blue Dial or AP 15202. Just my 2cents and congrats

I will throw in another consideration for you. Cost of service. Chronographs are typically much more expensive to get serviced. My experience is 3x a service than for a time only watch. (i don't have a PP or AP chronograph, so not familiar with their pricing.) Perhaps someone else can give costs.
Other than that I would try both on and see which you like best. Future value, honestly steel watches keep their value better than a gold or two tone watch. If you went that route you could by the AP and a PP as mentioned above. |

I would add that Patek's servicing is painfully slow. My 5712G took 9 months. Personally I don't think that's acceptable when I can get a Lange serviced in less than a third of the time.

I would start with an AP and then move on to a PP.

Welcome,
I think I would get Patek Philippe but if I buy something that may close to 6 digits that would be A Lange Sohne Double Split

yes, the problem for PP along has already made me headache. I love the 5711/1R's dress feeling, but the 5980 1AR obviously feels more sporty between the two.

You will see a significant price difference between the two in the pre-owned market. The price of pre-owned 5711r is very close to MSRP or more than the MSRP and that is not the case for the 15400RG.

This is something you should be able to get a clear indication of from your AD on the retail prices, I'm certain the discount on the AP will be materially higher than the PP (yes, neither of these need to be purchased at full retail). In terms of the choice between the two only you can determine which feels better, which gives you most joy and which suits your lifestyle. They are very different watches on the wrist. It's a great dilemma to have, these are super watches, good luck with the decision. |

I would think the resale of 15202 and 5711 is more similar.

I'd go either AP 15202 in SS, or PP 5711/1R - given that your experiencing this dilemma, if only partially, because this will be your first watch purchase over 40k (congrats!).
I'd go with the RG PP 5711/1R for the following reason - the 'softer' edges and design of the PP would seem to hold up better in RG than the APs highly angular, sharp edges. What a great problem to have. |

Thanks for the input. I never thought PP watch could keep value so well.
