Though I will say I think Panerai was about dead in the water prior to Sly's official and unofficial endorsements and the Daylight Chrono. They've been on the up up ever since and have done quite well after their acquisition by the "big group". But prior to the Daylight :

IMO Sly made them what they are today

When Sly was spotted in Rome years ago sporting a Paneria. Panerai sales shot way up. People trying to be a Sly. Same with Daytona, people feeling like Newman. Or any other celebrity wearing a particular brand/model watch. Same with the 36 mm Explorer, number of years ago. Japanese TV male idol spotted wearing on Japan TV or mag. Suddenly went into waiting list mode in Japan and elsewhere around the world. Good for the manufacturer, not for the consumer, i.e. premium prices result.

I would agree. Timing and product placement with current fashion can push a watch into the main stream and popular culture. The 80's yuppie movement sent Rolex sales on fire. I believe this is when the Rolex knock-offs infection became so wide spread. Every one had to have a Rolex if it was real or not.

So true! Started with a Rolex then avoided them like the plague. Now I can honestly say I'll never be without one again.

He publicly complained that Panerai released a new "Daylight" edition without talking to him about it and not giving him any $$$. Which means he probably privately asked for some consideration for the name and endorsement, an offer they apparently declined.
He probably is done with them.

Here's a cool old pic I'd not seen before. Jeans, t-shirt and a Rolex...I had no idea that I had the same style as vintage Sly.

Exactly this. They were both very instrumental in the resurgence of the brand.
