~1970 Daytona 6240 vs. 6263

Long time admirer of the forum, rare poster. I wanted to solicit thoughts/feedback on the attached watch. Through my amateur detective watch, I've triangulated the reference to either a 6240 or 6263, but any thoughts on the specifics would be much appreciated. By way of background, the watch has been worn by a family friend since original purchase in ~1970. The spring is currently broken and thus we are attempting to learn more about the watch before investing more money into it.

Apologies for the abysmal picture. I will try to get better photos shortly.

Thanks to all!

Just remove the bracelet on the 12 o clock side...your answer will be engraved on the case (assuming it hasn't worn away).

Well, if you don't want to spend the money on the springbar I guess I could take it off your hands. Just call me the junk man!

No, seriously though - a springbar is cheap and that is such a nice watch - go for it! :)

Probably a 6240 as it does not have Sigma dial which a 1970 6263 probably would. Also if bought in 1970 it's gonna be made a couple years earlier as these were never big or fast sellers back then, also pointing to 6240.

Looks like service Mk3 pushers but original bezel, dial and hands which are the main things. You can find nice Mk2 pushers on the forums to fit and get money back on the Mk3's.

Does the original owner still have the papers?

No original paperwork or box. It's been serviced by Rolex regularly and the service records are in tact. The spring has already been repaired once in the past 5 years. As you can see, the condition isn't great, but I do think it's original, aside from possibly the pushers as you've mentioned.

I would make sure the pushers are in working order. It's not like they get used on regular wear unless the owner likes playing with them just for fun....

Quite gorgeous

If you don't want to remove the bracelet, the ref should also be on the service papers.

Great watch! 6240 or 6363, I'd invest the grand or so to have it up and running. The hands, bezel and non Sigma dial look like the same ones on my '69/'70 6263.

Better pics would be great. Need to check the case for ref or the service papers as mentioned. Almost impossible to distinguish between a late 6240 and an early 6263. Keen to know what colour the dial is.

Thanks for all the interest guys. It is confirmed to be an early 6263. Pushers and all are working aside from the springbar. The coloration on the dial seems to be quite black, although a slight patina may be seen. Kind of a judgment call.
