Thanks so much guys

I am really bonding with this watch. Pictures don't do it full justice. The blue gradient of the dial changes colour to grey, grey-green and back to different shades of blue in an almost magic way depending on the light.

Thoughts on the 5712 vs the 5164?

They complement each other quite well. Would be hard for me to choose one over the other. Both are really excellent pieces and well worth the considerable effort needed to source them. Since I just got the 5712 I am ever so slightly biased towards that one at the moment. Below is a short comparison of the merits of both.

5712
More emotional and aesthetic watch with a lot of pure Patek DNA: Closer to original Genta 1970s design, comes with very well finished bracelet, thinner (almost as thin as the 5711), legendary 240 micro-rotor movement, gorgeous blue dial (love the dial!), romantic moon phase complication and "funky" asymmetric dial.

However, this is not really a tool watch: The polished surfaces and the bracelet scratch a bit too easily and it is only water resistant to 60m, the clasp is not easy to operate (I have at least not gotten used to it yet)

5164
More of a tool / weekend / travel watch (as much as can be for a Patek): Rubber strap is more practical and less scratch prone; it is water resistant to 120m, slightly thicker (more Rolex-like proportions of case), better (more easy to operate) clasp, very practical travel time complication, more modern 324 movement.

However, for some the Aquanaut will always be that other Patek sports watch vs. the Nautilus. It can IMHO not beat the Nautilus blue dial, but it does have a rather aesthetically pleasing globe-in-globe dial design.

So for me the conclusion is:

5712: For the office and more formal occasions

5164: For weekends, travels and less formal nights out (obviously still not the right watch for the beach or DIY work, that is what Rolexes are for )

The 5712 is very thin:

Thanks much for the thorough write up. That's helpful as I try to decide what's next
