I actually know multiple ‘watch guys’ who only have one Rolex and it’s always a Sub. To some, Rolex is the best, for lack of a better word, as a ‘beater’ and utilize the majority of their funds towards other brands.

Don’t get me wrong, Rolex is amazing at what they do and holds the value more than any other.....but one has to admit the styling is a bit repetitive.

DD is above my $20K price cap... so, my picks are:

Submariner, Datejust, Daytona

This captures the most “breadth” across the brand for me.
+1

Sub SS (you could also argue GMT)
Daytona SS - white dial
DJ SS jubilee/fluted - pick your dial colour

This gives you the best range imo.

A Sub is a terrific choice for that one and only Rolex. But 3 Subs?? Sorry, a SD or DSSD is just a beefier Sub for me. Why not pick the one you liked the most, stick to one Rolex, and save some money in the process?

I know that it's 'your collection, your rules'. But some choices just leave me baffled.

I’m with you, I don’t get it. There’s some who will grab the Kermit and the regular black sub, but not my money!

Three doesn’t work well for the hypothesis IMHO.

Any Rolex collector wanting to full monte has to have the land, sea and air combo. Then wouldn’t you also have to throw in a DJ or a DD?

Sure I do but I don't like colors, don't like complications don't like jewelry and after many years on this hobby, selling a watch is a painful process to me so I stay where I'm comfortable.

I also have 3 rolexes currently, being the wg sub, white dial ceramic daytona and sd4k. 3 different cases, colors and moods. I think I'm all set rolex wise.

Like the “attainable” filter by Bas above! For me the three “attainable” pieces at this point are:

18239
16610
16622

A fourth one would be a GMT (probably a BLRO or a BLNR) with a fifth one being a chrono (perhaps a Daytona)

Really happy with the trio I ended up with while staying within my budget. It's not the most exciting collection but I love the variety they offer and how each model is unique with no overlap in design.

So far I have:
-36mm DJ fluted with hidden clasp jubilee
-Sub C Date black
-Daytona pre-ceramic with white dial

Next on the list to "complete" the collection would be a YG DayDate. Probably not for a long time though but I'll have all the iconic Rolex's after that.

I would have to say for me... being that I have 2 of my 3.. it would be

SD 16600
GMT 16710
and add a DD... 5 digit.

4 watches would obviously be easier (DJ, Sub, GMT, Daytona). If I have to pick 3 I probably skip the Daytona.

There is not way I’ll be able to narrow it down to just three watches. However, I will try-

DD40
GMT IIc LN or BLNR
16570

Skydweller (covers GMT function and DJ look), Sub, Daytona

Or

Sub, DD, Daytona (more classic trio)

Ah...another You tube video with the secret to life.

If the totality of Rolex could be experienced with 3 watches, then I would have 3. Unfortunately, it can't.

Sorry, sporty people in a Rolex list of three you have to include the Date-Just .

Has to be 4 ,not 3 :

DD
DJ
Sub
Daytona

Nothing says Rolex like those four.Cannot exclude one .

Are we picking the three most iconic or our favorite three?

Icons...DD, DJ, Sub. Yes, I left the Daytona out. I think those three are far more recognizable to the common person.

My faves...DD, GMT, Daytona.
