1680 insert

Hi,

I’m brand new to this forum & have questions which seek some guidance.

I’m considering to purchase this 1680 but want to check If this insert is a serviced or a so-called MK4 (MK4 thin font flat 4 76-88)

Any advice would be much appreciated

Best,
Kris

Hi,

To me 1976 is definitely too early for this one.
I would very roughly say 1985-1990 and would be happy to hear from the more experienced guys about their opinion.

Kind regards,

1680s were produced until 1980.

The insert is a later replacement.

It's a 5513 insert found during the 1980s and maybe it was used as a service replacement too!

oK, you were referring to the insert. Thought you were referring to the watch.

I'd leave it as is. An after market "pearl" won't look right and will lower the value. I don't believe Rolex via AD or service center will replace the pearl part of the bezel insert on older Submariners (pre-ceramic). You may have to replace the bezel insert, this would be expensive and you would have a service insert.

You can leave as-is or buy a vintage pearl, they usually sell for $250-$300.

They at least used to up until about last year. I had a luminova pearl inserted into the original bezel insert of my -78 1680 at my AD, they charged me 50$ in total for it.

Totally possible, I too have a 1978 or so 1680 Submariner with a damaged pearl. I asked at a Denver, Colorado AD if I could get the pearl replaced. They declined to do it inhouse and offered to send it to New York, but with the likelihood of replacement bezel insert being installed without return of the existing insert. I declined the offer. The Denver AD might have done just the pearl, maybe they didn't have one or just didn't want to make the effort.
