Need help on Verifying First Rolex

I'm looking at buying my first Rolex and my friend, who works at a local Watch Store, is looking to give me a good deal on my first Rolex.

Originally, I was looking at a circa 1990, black dial, no box no papers and was offered the next day, the same price on a 1986/1988 champagne dial with box/papers.

I was really set on a sapphire crystal, and according to the listing, it shows sapphire crystal, but according to the 16013 serial, shows plastic.

I'm not sure if it's a misprint, but looks like same watch, one shows 1986 while the other shows 1988, is there a way to confirm this before I confirm the sale?

Shows sapphire crystal but 16013,

Shows 16013, but 1988 & saphire crystal?

I found out it is a 1986.

So I'm debating between a no box/no papers, black dial 16233 and a 16013 champagne dial, better condition band and box + papers...

Which seems to be the better deal?

Value any input!

I'm guessing you're talking about the 16013?
Might just be a typo? Or is there any evidence to back the statement?

I was thinking that as well, but listed here, it says plastic?

According to what I've read, the cyclops on the sapphire is glued on and is molded as part of the crystal with the acrylic.

Ask the seller (or you can do) a water beading test.
If it "is" sapphire the drop of water will form a "bead" if its plastic the water will spread out over the plastic,

I'd pass. Try a trusted seller on TRF, I just picked up a 2000 DJ from Capetown Diamonds, good experience.

An even easier test is just hold it to your fore head.

Hello,

Check Dtwatches, ocrolexguy or any reputable dealer on the forum, you'll find your happiness.
Seems a bit overprice to me, hope your friend give you a 20% discount.

What can be simpler then holding it to your forehead?

If it feels warm to the touch it's plastic and if it feels cold it's sapphire.

Try it, you'll be surprised.

Doesn't look like a misprint to me, those are clearly two different watches (both 16013s).

The 1986 appears to have a linen dial, and the original case-back sticker still in place. The 1988 appears to have a standard champagne dial and no case-back sticker.

I just tried it Mon and you were of course right.

I'm sorry I doubted you and please accept my apology for the sarcastic remark I made.

PS. Goes for Adam as well.

Yep, old trick that works well.

Another one that is even easier (and won't leave a smudge) is to simply tap the crystal with the back of your fingernail.
If it's acrylic, it will make a very distinct/sharp sound. If it's sapphire, it won't make any noise at all, just a faint "thud" sound.

Thanks for confirming.

It's indeed an old trick that I learned back in 1983 when I bought my first Rolex sapphire crystal watch.
