I dive Puget Sound and yep, the GPO is precisely that : the Great Pacific Octopus and is the largest of the species in the world.

If you're wresting with them - you're doing it all wrong. Those guys are extremely shy.
Ive coaxed them to come out of their den ( very slowly ) with small bits of crab.
They can extend one arm - and work their suckers individually - which is almost freakish considering they have thousands of suckers. Weird critters.

In any case - re: the watch . Looks like it's been with him the whole time. It's amazing by itself !

Very interesting story about a true adventurer and his watch.

I don't think I could have parted with it for any amount of money.

That guy would never be able to buy a Rolex today. Shame that there won’t be stories like this in the future.

Wow! Did not know they were shy. I do like eating them however. I'm sure you have some great stories to tell.

I likely would have kept it too if the situation allowed. But cash is king for most folks.

Have to agree. Shame really. Next stories will be about Miami night clubs and surviving moving a sofa.

Great story, thanks for sharing. There were guys taking on GPO's in wrestling competitions, probably totally unrefereed... Living is learning.

Cheers

I’m grateful for stories like this to remind us of where we’ve come from. The watch doesn’t care who wore it; the story behind it (provenence) attests to why the brand carries so much value still today. It is sad that there are so few frontiers left in the world.

Agreed. I’m actually curious to read these in 20-30 years. If there are any.

Haha! Thank you and welcome. Going to ask a friend who lives up there if the former owner if he’s well and recognized in the community.

"Bill shows off his first-place octopus wrestling trophy". Classic. Sounds like a caption from a top notch Far Side cartoon. Great story.

Do you think he worried about scratches or future investment value?? How about the box? Do you think he was concerned if he had the right inner box for the watch?

Great story and a throwback to the days when men saw Rolex as a good durable watch and nothing more.
