Long Term Durability? Oyster vs Jubilee

Hello All,

I am currently in the market for a DJ 41 with a smooth bezel. However I am torn between a jubilee band or an oyster band. From the research ive done I have read that the jubilee band tend to stretch and break down faster than oyster bands. Is this true with modern bracelets? For those who have had modern jubilee bands have you felt stretch?

pics are more than welcomed!

The old jubilee's with the hollow links definitely wore faster than the oyster bracelets. I had my jubilee from 1984 that I had rebuilt last year. It had a lot of sag and the pins had serious wear. With the new jubilees and oysters not sure if one wears faster than another.

My wife has a modern DJ36 on a Jubilee. Everything looks fine for now... The watch case shows more wear than the bracelet in her instance. I don't personally have experience with a jubilee so that's the best I can offer. I think as long as you take care if it wear it snug and clean it you should be fine.

Not even worth considering in my mind. The newer bands are likely to fare much better than the older ones. But in the very unlikely event that they don't, it would only mean you have to set aside the equivalent of $300 or so, for a repair sometime around 2050-2060.

Don't overthink it and get the one you like the most.

When you say long term I don't believe the new improved jubilees have been out that long to really tell. The older ones did have a stretch problem that showed long before the oysters. I was always more of an oyster fan myself after my first TT DJ36 w/jubilee years ago but you won't have anything to worry about for a lonnggg time.

From what I have seen, even the newer Jubilee is more prone to stretching than the Oyster. What would I do, easy, same thing I did. Get the Jubilee. It will still take decades to stretch if you wear it properly (not too tight or too loose) and clean it often enough, it is more comfortable and looks better (although the last one is subjective).

What you call stretch is really the pins upon which links pivot as one wears the watch.

It’s how dirty you let the links get where they pivot, how loose you wear the watch and how much true heavy duty you exert upon your Rolex that will cause your bracelet to wear down. That is, over the next 20+ years.

With more pins and links, a Jubilee might appear worse for the wear vs. the Oyster but they are both just as robust over the same course of events.

Jubilee will wear faster than oyster. It’s not an unsolvable problem as the bracelets can be repaired. Buy the one you like better. Don’t overthink it.

Bracelet “stretch” aside, one benefit the jubilee provides over the oyster with pcl’s is that it hides scratches much, better ... fact they are hardly noticeable

Yeah you really will never see scratches on the jubilee - same goes for the president. Bracelet stretch drives me insane though I pick up the watch and check it every day I can’t relax, scratches + oyster bracelet is what I prefer.

Keep your bracelets clean and they will last a very long time.

Even when "stretch" becomes extreme, the cost of a repair is very affordable, relative to the price of a new bracelet.

As for which one is more durable, I think it is wholly dependent of the owner's commitment to good maintenance practices.

A jubilee will look "new" longer than an oyster, if that's a consideration.

I simply can't understand the angst, all of these bracelets are over 50 years old.

With minimal care your bracelet will outlast you;

I would pick the one that appeals to me the most and go forward. Stretch is not an issue for the foreseeable future unless you abuse the bracelet. I had always been a oyster fan until I got the jubilee on the BLNR. Looks great and it is super comfortable. Good luck.

Is this an option? Can you order an oyster if you have jubilee without having to surrender the jubilee and vice versa?
