It's not the gold that would worry me. It would be the actual Crystal. Rolex does not put anti-reflective coating on their crystals. As I'm sure many of you are aware this tends to catch the light.

There have been many times where I have been able to play with the reflection coming off of the crystal of my watch, because it is so dang bright.

If it were me, I would get the dial replaced. The damage is pretty noticeable. Also, if I were a buyer, the story as presented would be a red flag. So many people out there trying to take advantage. Even if your story is true, I wouldn't take the risk of buying your watch.

But on a positive note, if you get it serviced at Rolex and have all the paperwork, that will definitely add credibility to the authenticity of the watch when you go to sell it

Since he made the story of the watch part of the deal, which he did by telling it, he should have provided evidence to prove it. Otherwise he should have said nothing. That's my opinion. Watches with stories matter in the collecting world. He knew it would help sell his damaged watch.

He likely whacked it on one of the thousands of metal corners on the inside of an aircraft during training but that's not cool story.

The back story is really not relevant.

It's his story, not yours, and a few chips on the dial cannot confirm or deny anything.

It's your watch now. Have the dial changed if you want; your estimates are likely in the ballpark.

Now, if it had a 7.62 crescent on the lug, you might want to hang onto that - and the story.

Honestly it's just a 5digit Bluesy with a damaged dial.

Change it out if it bugs you

Story sounds bogus to me those coins can be had off eBay.
If it had been through all that in five years I would expect more damage.
How would you expect great condition for a used in action piece.
He probably bigged it up for a better price.
I'm pretty sure that SEAL was out Phishing.
I'm not buying that seller sorry.

Sounds like a cock & bull story to me. Why would you risk wearing a Rolex! Not only is it valuable and could give away your position. If you were captured, you would never see it again.

The watch is a nice watch standalone.

But the story... yeah, no one way he would've been permitted to wear a TT Rolex on any mission.

Jumping into Call of Duty Warzone doesn't count.

The arrogance of liars is worse than the lie itself. They believe themselves to be smarter than you and trick you into believing their lie for their benefit above yours. They laugh at you when the deal is done. Think about that.
I don't want to be tricked. I don't want to be fooled. I don't want to be tested.
How much money did you save? After all this how much was that worth?

For a combat worn ex-Seal TT Sub, this bluesy looks to be in extremely good condition. Barely any mark on the case, lugs, bezel, inserts and even the gold part of the bracelet... hmmm....

Begs the question, why the story?
To inflate the price?
Or Deflect any questions on the provenance

Hmmm, I was issued one (sub 5513/5517) while I was in service. and it was shinny. Try NSN6645-01-068-1088. That's the military part number for it.

As anyone in the military will tell you, When you sign for something in the military, you are responsible for the item. So when they ask for it back, you had better produce it or else!. Had it the whole time I was in service. 1979-1982.
In 1982 I purchased my first Rolex just like it to replace it.

I was a Submarine Officer in the 1980s, spent time in several “hot spots” under “hostile conditions”. We had Seal teams on board doing covert ops. While they may wear a Rolex in non-combat I cannot image they would be allowed to wear anything that could compromise a mission like a shiny watch. Also a life long shooting enthusiast (Expert rating rifle and pistol, instructor), a direct hit from an AK round most likely would have damaged the watch beyond being repaired. Sorry to rain on your parade but I don’t buy the story.

Having said that enjoy the watch (love the Bluesy). I wear a 5 digit Submariner most days.

Yes, Hind sight is 20\20. Who knew!

We were actually issue several different Brands under the same NSN. My Battalion supply would issue another to you if you had a problem. We were "supposed" to check them if we were involved in a submerged activity and turn them in right away if we had a problem. The Rolex did not look like todays. Different hands and dials, Backs we engraved with numbers and such. Some times we would get a Rolex , Omega, Breitling or a Heuer. There was a couple of others but can't remember. I do remember if you were in sand you could trash the crystal pretty quick. I think all were plastic or just glass.

Maybe the bluesy was tucked away safely during most of the military operations...

I second this...and if the dial has been changed the etched crown will indicate replacement service dial....might be worth having a look

Not for nothing, the seller survived a neck hit from an AK-47, which fires a 7.62x39.... The odds of surviving that are just so incredibly low, even if it was a partial hit or ricochet.

Update!!!

Talked to Don shipley on the phone.

He comfirmed the owner was a SEAL and that he was one of Dons instructors in BUDS

He said he hated the guy and the story is likely oversold / made more extreme but he again confirmed he was a SEAL and provided that in writing to me as well.

Cool story though.

He must have taken good care of the bluesy during missions. I know people that made more damage in desk diving, beach and bathroom diving.

For real, this story could at the most make a B movie.

Replace the dial and forgive and forget. Wear this in good health and enjoy the watch and don't mention the story again. :)

Guys, I totally believe it could have been damaged/worn in combat. You all may laugh, but this is exactly why I stopped wearing my rainbow Daytona when I was with the Justice League. Superman wanted all the attention the watch was getting, and the watch couldn't compete with any of Batman's gadgets. I ended up just carrying my phone to tell the time, and as a bonus I could take calls from Batman to bail him out.
