Not to my taste. But I appreciate the workmanship. You have to be a person who realizes the exquisite workmanship that is not visible to the eye. That knowledge itself is valuable to the right person.

Unlike most of you gentlemen im not a watch expert but I have worked in the luxury car market for a while now. Reminds me of Lexus releasing the LFA a few years ago. Beautiful vehicle but at almost half a mill most people would much rather go for a Ferrari or Lamborghini. I think thats the dilemma for anyone who is thinking about spending that much on a "Seiko".

Many people outside these virtual walls (here and other forums) actually just buy what they like, and don’t have a crisis of conscious over the name on the dial!
As for your Lexus analogy – it mattered not what “most” people would’ve rathered, since they sold every one they produced, and probably could’ve sold more if they really wanted to milk it for all it was worth.

Love the watch, but just changing metal content doesn't justify the price. IMO
Still, 53 jewel and super nice.

This watch has several properties (the case material not being one of them), which are unique to this Grand Seiko model.
You need to increase your knowledge of current Grand Seikos to appreciate why your conclusion is incorrectly drawn.

While its price is a bit steep, Grand Seiko (as a brand) should be handled in person to be fully appreciated and I'm sure that this one in platinum is really something awesome.

IMHO, Grand Seiko produces truly wonderful watches, with awesome fit and finish and cutting-edge Spring Drive and HEQ quartz movements.

Gorgeous watch. Again GS overpriced their watch, and this price has fallen into their top of the line Credor range.

Beautiful.

Someday, someone will create a high quality, high finish wrist watch with absolutely no brand name or marketing info ("50m" or "Swiss") on the dial. Just an elegant, simple and pure watch. And they will change the industry.

I think there is a thought that Rolex are no more durable or reliable than an average ETA watch. With the breguet overcoil/microstella and no lever I would suggest that is false. Especially with the grueling punishment Rolex puts their watches through before letting them out the door. They don't just make sure the dial lines up perfectly, it is my understanding they actually try to break the watches in various tests before releasing them because one of the watches they gave an American VIP broke during golf and they decided that was very bad for the brand.

Yep, the finishing on this watch is exceptional, but you have to know how to look. Someone in the previous post said a Patek Calatrava has more finishing but it doesn't. In fact this GS is far better (Though for the same price, the Eichi II is even better in my opinion).

Of course, if it's not easy to tell, then what's the point? So a watch like this, is really for someone who cares and appreciate little details.

rolex just 'market' there tests better. all watch companies in their range do the same tests.

That's simply not true. Posting that one company may do it would only invalidate a statement that "Only" Rolex does it. You would have to post similar tests for every watch in the "range" to prove that. I know for example Breitling doesn't, just look at the b55/b50. Maybe you should research Rolex Comex machines a bit, or the fact that every single watch is tested before leaving the factory. Were you aware one of the Speedmasters completely failed on the moon?

"It is a fact that an Omega Speedmaster had its crystal knocked off during Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) on an Apollo mission, thus rendering the watch useless." http://www.rolexmagazine.com/2008/06...iii-story.html

The IWC tests you have linked to is for general watch designs in the "prototype" phase but perhaps they test all their pilots series: "several months which are designed for new watches at the prototype phase or later as part of the approval process for the pilot series."

Rolex tests every individual watch that leaves their factory. I believe it is said that they if a Rolex breaks they want it to break at the factory. Just one reason it takes about a year for a Rolex to leave the factory.

Anyway we can agree to disagree, happy easter.

For that level of money I'd go with a PP.
Of course, you can have a very cool PP or a Voutilainen if you want exclusivity, I really don't think it's worth 55k... Plus on such a piece I expect to see a beautiful movement, not a big base plate, however well finished it is. Point is that at that price point you have a ton of great looking watches from the best brands or small independents in the business, for me spending 55k on this watch is totally nuts, but probably sole will do it, like the guy in PJ's link who gave up a 5980 to get one, much prefer the PP

The laughable thing for me here, is many (most?) wouldn’t bat an eyelid at the similarly priced Platinum Daytona (of which Rolex make a damn sight more than just 20 of, each year), but will raise all sorts of objections as to why a Grand Seiko has no right to occupy the same market segment.
It truly would be comedic, if it wasn’t such as sad indictment of everything wrong with brand snobbery!

Arnaud, when it comes to exclusivity, what number do you consider that to be?
Are you of the opinion that 20 pieces produced annually is mass production?

Watches that comes out of the Seiko Micro Artist Studio are special, like Hodinkee said, if you get it, you get it.

But I also understand most just can't past the Seiko brand.

Disclaimer: I have one.

If I could, I would!

Unless you wear the same automatic day-in, day-out, I can't tell you how wonderful having eight days of PR really is! I have the fortune of enjoying it with my PAM 233.

c/o Deployant

But the overall form, function and build-quality of any Grand Seiko is simply amazing. To have both in one would be awesome. And just look at that dial, please...

c/o Deployant

If it only came in SS or Ti...
...so until then, I'll have to survive with my poor-man's GS and "only" 72hrs of PR...

It's a beautiful watch still, a year later....
As to the $55K price and buying something else, I'm going to take a stab and say the target buyer of this watch probably has a sock drawer full of Patek, Jorne, Lange rattling around already.....

I also prefer the older "Seiko" dialed models, so what do I know...

The price is about right. This watch is far better technology and quality IMO than a platona. It will take a big depreciation hit, but GS is a watch to be collected, not flipped.

How does GS differ from Credor, which I thought was Seiko's high-end watch?

GS is the regular everyday watch, Credor is the line which gets specialised treatment like diamonds and manually wound Spring Drive movements.
Made in smaller numbers, so more exclusive.

True in a way. But from a brand with lower luxury perception than other brands regularly selling in that price range, it should offer something more substantial in terms of design, something more unique.

Someone mentioned above it's a 'Toyota'.... That is right, they should've made it look like a supercar's watch. Not a sedan.

It's full of impressive stuff under the hood, but I'm forced to say from 1 meter distance it looks like a similar designed watch 55 times cheaper.....
