Do you use the term "No Date" to talk about the Submariner?
Sorry if the topic is irrelevant and not of your interest but it's just something that crossed my mind and I decided to talk about here.
I was on the Submariner and Submariner Date camp for many years when I talked about them here or on the outside world with normal people, but it was not something natural. For me it's much easier and natural to use "Submariner" for my 116610LN and "Sub No Date" or just "No Date" for my 14060M and 114060, so I just don't care about the right nomenclature anymore. Do you call it "No Date"? |

Only to clarify for those who don’t realize the Submariner is the name for the no date.

yes i do.
Its incorrect but the sub date is the common sub therefore i assume most people are referring to a sub date when they say Sub. Its logical to shorten the one 95% of people own and clarify (ND) to the one that 5% of people are talking about

As far as I know it's always been Sub and Sub Date for the longest time, but somehow Sub and Sub No Date has been more prevalent in the last few years. Can't really say exactly when that happened.

I rarely speak of Submariners at all, but I think I specify “Date”, instead of “No Date.”

Yes, I do. Makes it easier to differentiate the two.

And I would like to use the "no date" more especially after someone post some lecture here on why the "no date" is wrong and bothering him blah blah blah, as if he was the 1st one found the new continent:-) |

I totally get what you're saying. I like to refer to the Subariner without a date as the "Submariner" and the Sub with date as the "Submariner with date." I do the same with Explorer and Explorer II. I generally don't refer to the Explorer as the Explorer I. It's not the correct name. But sometimes it's not teribbly clear so I'll reluctantly call it the Explorer I.

Even though I know the difference between the Submariner and Submariner Date, a lot of people don't.
Sometimes you just need to clarify. |

I would refer to it as a No date Sub even though I'm aware myself that it's just a Sub and the other is the Sub Date. I just think it's more clear when talking to someone who might not be as sick as us.

Or maybe it's an age thing? Those of us who are older call it the old way, younger ones call it the new way?

I do use Sub and Sub no date. Submariner Date seems to be the most commonly referenced Submariner.
IMO both are still the Submariner, with one just having an added date function It's like Kleenex vs Tissue, where once a word has such common use in language it has dual uses. Submariner Date is still a Submariner, while the Explorer 2 is not still an Explorer. Those latter 2 are completely unrelated models, while the former are imo the Same watch to a large degree. Another example both 116520 and 116500 are both Daytonas, even though some call the 116500 the Daytona C regardless if officially named so or not. |

As others have stated, I do refer to the "Submariner" as the "no date" sub and I do realize that it is not correct, but I also feel like a lot of people who have a Submariner Date just say that they have a "Sub"...so even though I know it's officially wrong to say "no date", I do it for clarification reasons.
When you say it, there is no doubt what you are talking about. Which, I believe, is the goal of communication. I do not, however, refer to the Explorer as the "Explorer I". That one seems to be more clear in my mind. There is an Explorer and there is an Explorer II and I'm ok with that. |

yes - one logical reason is that it's there's only one color/metal config with out a date in the current line up so it's very specific.

Although I know many seem to be prideful of their Submariner being the original, and that the "no date" shouldn't be necessary or is almost a slight to the heritage, I actually like specifying mine as a "no date" because it implies uniqueness.
Everywhere I go, I see Submariner Dates - I almost never spot another Submariner. So IMHO I own the less common watch (which I love), and in turn call it the "no date" as a nod to it not being the "standard", "run of the mill", etc...I use the term as a point of pride if anything. |

I would call a Sub a Sub, and a Sub Date a Sub Date. Although it rarely comes up, because if it's LV or LB it's a Sub Date by default. If it's a TT or PM it's a Sub Date by default. If it has a nick name, it's a Sub Date by default. It is not necessary to stipulate that any of these has a date function for the purpose of differentiation. They are already differentiated from the 114060.

Yup, 30+ years and it has always been either Submariner or Sub no-date.
