I prefer military style tool watches, like some of the vintage Rolex models were. The Explorer is perfect in many ways for me. 39mm=perfect size! flat profile, strong enough lume, tool style with just a hint of flash, Great movement, matte dial, Great bracelet, pedigree, I have finally come home.
Your points are spot on. Also like your comments on the other models in the Rolex line, great watches, but they just don't cover all the bases like the Explorer. This was my third Rolex, had it been my first, perhaps it would be my only.

The Explorer is a wonderful watch. I've been wearing my first Rolex, the Explorer ii for 10 years, now I have the Explorer. I have to say, it's a very very nice change. Going from a date to no date sets you free.

I thought after getting the Daytona, I would be contented enough not to dream of another Rollie. I was wrong! The Explorer keeps coming to my mind.
Now, it seems to me that I would not be contented unless I have the Explorer!
I believe it is due to the beauty of its evergreen classic yet sporty look!

Great review, and great pics above. I Couldn't be happier with the exp 1 as my first and only rolex. Every day is a pleasure wearing it

Great review and comments guys. You described everything I love about the Explorer. I bought my first Rolex (an Explorer) 8 days ago to celebrate my 15th wedding anniversary. I absolutely love it and have literally thanked my wife for it everyday so far.

In the short time I've had it, I have worn the watch doing everything from weeding my garden to going to the theatre. For me, it is the perfect go anywhere, do everything watch. I am very pleased to know that one day, it will be passed down to one of my boys.

I couldn't help but take a picture of it while picking blueberries with my wife and kids today. My wife laughs at me, but she knows how much this watch means to me.

Great review and great subject ofcourse! I was on the line a week ago, but i left the AD with the new milgauss. I love the explorer I, but i can't seem to understand the short H hand and the long M hand. I love the beauty of the watch, the bracelet, i only don't like the polished bezel. But in every case - great great watch, maybe someday..

As many have said, the OP was a very balanced and thoughtful review. I'm sure it will be read for quite some time, by anyone considering the Explorer model...a watch btw I can't speak more highly of. Here's my 114270:

Great review. I own a 36mm Explorer 1 (it's been less than a week) and your review totally resonates with my brief experience so far! Thanks for this.

I agree with all. This is a great anywhere, anytime watch. And it fits so comfortable on the wrist.

If it had a date it would be more convienent but it would break up the beauty of the dial. If it were bigger it would not be as comfortable and attract too much attention. If it had polished center links I would hate it and want to have them brushed. If it didn't have a flip lock I would want one.
This is my 4th Rolex and I think I have finally found "the one."
A Sub? Too common, too recognizable, more expensive, too bulky for daily wear, plus I am not a diver, do I really need an expensive dive watch? No. My CWC Royal Navy or my G shock works fine when I venture in water for a swim, the Explorer I would too for that matter. I have owned a Submariner 2 liner and it is an exquisite watch, just not the perfect watch for me.
The GMT? beautiful, I love the black and blue model but it is big, bulky and wow! expensive! I had an a Explorer II for a while and used the 2nd time zone once, I travel a lot but usually in the same time zone. there is just no need for it unless you travel all the time all around the world, even then I would probably just set my EXP I to local time as I needed to.
The Datejust II? Beautiful watch, I had one and loved it. It commands respect and somehow still flys under the radar. The date function is very nice to have, I had the silver dial and it is a beauty of a watch. Reasons I got rid of it? Too big for me, at 41mm it is just seems too big for a watch with no diving/GMT bezel or chronograph. The lume was not particularly good, the baton hands just don't do it for me, I like the Rolex sword and Mercedes hand combo. The bracelet was extremely comfortable but the polished center links grew tiresome for me, too flashy, too scratch prone, too fashion and not enough function, no flip lock either(no need for it I guess but it bothered me)

Simply beautiful . But I have never owned a watch without a date and I'm just not sure how much I would miss it...

Thanks for the great review, OP.

I agree with everything in the OP's review and everything said here in this thread. It is a great watch and I can't believe I waited so long to get one as it was calling me for some time. It is truly versatile; multi-viscosity if you will.

Now, your sentence above, however true it may be, is heresy! You should be flogged, banned and anything else we can do to you!

DO NOT EVER tell my wife your thoughts in that regard pertaining to ANY watch!

This write-up may be just what I needed to tip me over to buy the Explorer 1 instead of the Submariner, its a hard decision.

It is quite possibly the perfect Rolex IMO. Wonderfully comfortable to wear, flies under the radar & can be worn with a tux, suit or jeans. I love mine..

I just think its perfect, the 36mm was way to small for me but the 39mm is fantastic fit and just as comfortable as my Sub, now that is saying something.

For a sport watch is too dressy, for a dress watch is a little bit sporty, it let you transition from business to the gym to the bar with no problem.
It's a wonderful watch.

Fantastic writeup, great balance of fact and personal opinion. I think the personal touches really flesh out the impression when they're presented in authentically and honestly. Oddly, this review solidifies my desire to own a 114270... :D

I have had a 16613ln, a 16570 and now my 214270, It is the best daily wearer in my collection and my favorite watch (at least until i can afford a 116618lb) and also the only one that I can see myself never parting with!
