Great Hodinkee breakdown of Patek Perpetual Calendar Chrono's

Mr Ben Clymer keeps the subject matter very interesting with this video.
Perpetual Calendar arguably Pateks most iconic references.

Id love to sit down with Michael from Madison Time and pick his brain about all that is Patek someday

Saw that video earlier today, as a big fan of the 1518 and the 2499 I am very glad that Hodinkee decided to do this video! Thank you for sharing David my friend.

Something about those vintage 1518s and 2499s (maybe the worn patina look and the oversized crown) that just makes them look better than the modern Pateks.

Need to save up more money.....

Excellent work here! What I love most is that the dials vary to such a degree that the 'series' determines the basic format but in reality there are so many variations within these series that each watch is likely to have a unique dial of sorts.

Example being 3rd series can be found with or without the '30' of which it can either be touching the 15 of the date wheel and be either centred with the '0' of 30 or be off centre or be centred to the 16 marker/dot (or same as the above but not touching the date numbers).

Alternatively, the 6 o'clock marker either lined up with the '1' of the number 15 of the date wheel or lined up with the 16 marker/dot of the date wheel or not lined up with either and be positioned between the 2.

Early series 3 have no markers at 3 and 9 O'clock while later series 3 have the same gold 'dot' markers at 3 and 9 O'clock as at 5 and 8 o'clock markers.

And I can't understand how the 'hands' work - online sources say which series have which hands but continuously see these in auction as a complete set with the 'wrong' hands.

Sorry for the rant, just a really interesting subject!

You should make and appointment and go visit him - his store is like a treasure trove the dial and metal variations he has for most of the iconic Patek references is off the chart.

He obviously makes a slight sales pitch but nothing too imposing - its actually very hard to leave the store without picking something up.

Ask to see some of the real special pieces - you will be blown away.

Next time I am in NYC and if I have the cash I might make an appointment. I would not want to waste his time. I have been lusting for a 3970 :)

A fascinating article. Two quotes in particular caught my attention:

"Consider the fact that not a single other manufacture even attempted a perpetual calendar chronograph for another half a century after the 1518's introduction."

I hadn't realised Patek had been so far ahead of the game.

"But, what the 1518 does have that no other Patek perpetual chronograph has to this day is a few examples in what many believe to be the ultimate metal for a Patek Philippe, and that's stainless steel."

SS is the ultimate metal for a Patek? Why?

Well, I don't know it is because Patek was far ahead or because there wasn't a big market for other manufacturers to bother making them. Personally I believe it's the latter, as Patek wasn't exactly selling lots of perpetual chronograph themselves either. Stern in an interview by Watchtime or some other media had said they make few perpetual calendar chronos back then because there wasn't a big demand.

SS grand complications is the ultimate because Patek makes so few of them, and rarity is the biggest driver for auction prices.
