A sad conclusion.

I absolutely love the Rolex Explorer, both the Explorer and the Explorer 2.

I own a 36mm explorer, which was my dads.

And a white dial and black dial 39mm red hand.

When the new explorers came out, wow- couldn't wait!

The 39mm Explorer came first; and I had the first one that came to the AD.

Brilliant. Love it, my daily beater.

Then we get to the explorer 2...

Couldn't decide between black and white- so ended up with both

Oh, how much I want to like them...love the orange hand, but evertime I wear them. They are just to big, to bling.

They will probably end up going...

Because when it comes down to it, the red hand white dial can't be beaten. Perfect size, perfect proportion.

If Rolex had made the new one just 40mm.....

That red hand is a beautiful piece and I happen to agree. Like the way that some of the older explorer dials patina as well.

Ifnonly they had made the new one a tad smaller...

The 42 mm is great for legibility. I can see why they have done it. The 39mm is hard to read in a tent at night...
But the 42 mm just keeps getting knocked about..it's too big.

Yup, the new Explorer II with 42mm is just too big for my skinny wrists. 16570 fits perfectly.

I agree with a lot of your points. I think the orange hand is what makes the Explorer II for me which is why I went with the 42mm version. It is a tad too big albeit extremely legible. I feel that Rolex saw an opening with this model to go a size bigger and really contrast it with the GMT Master II. I like how it fits in the current lineup but definitely see that as a stand alone it can be a tad too big. I'm wearing mine now as I type this; I am not sure I could ever part with it.

Lovely watch; I'm for the older model as well. Mines not the white dial one however. And you were responsible for me getting it.

BTW, I was looking at mine next to my DJII and thinking how nice it would be if the ExpII had a polished bezel. It would really make it pretty.

By the way, where have you been hiding? Off traveling on an expedition?

I totally agree with you. Orange hand on a black dial, awesome...

Yet the gmt is 40mm. Tone down the maxi dial a little, and at 40mm an orange hand explorer. Unbeatable..I will probably keep the black dial as it is an orange hand explorer 2...but...

When I got my Explorer II, I came to the same conclusion and opted for the red hand, white version. Something about the newer 42mm one didn't do it for me. No doubt in my mind, the Explorer II for me is the 16570.

I'm with you.

16570 is one of the most comfortable watches I've ever worn. Still flipped though. Not a fan of the older clasps. Agree 42 too big for us lil wristers

My problem is, I like the thought of having a new modern Rolex. The latest one in line, but they are just not the same...

I have 7.5 wrist. And it is too big still.

The old clasps are not as good, they do the job, and until the new ones came along..never bothered.

If Rolex made the "new" version of the EXP II in 39-40mm, it would be my favorite watch ever. Love the orange hand, love the floating hands on the black version, love the maxi dial in matte finish. Please Rolex, bring us all these great updates in a smaller case!

In my opinion the 16550 was and is the best looking Ex2 with the 16570 being a close second. The other 2 leave me cold

That's what I'm thinking. Keep the 39mm explorer. Let the 42mm go..

I have 6.5" wrists. The 16570 fits like a dream. For my $ it's the most comfortable Rolex of all.

Must say, I did have a few concerns re the size of the 216570.
However, since acquiring, it is so brilliantly legible in the dark that it is perfect for what I need it for.
I'm staying!

I bought the newer Explorer II (white) 216570 over the 16570 because I love the orange GMT hand. The 42mm size concerned me, but it hasn't been an issue. The 216570 is very comfortable on my smaller, flat-ish wrist (6 7/8 inches). However, I agree that 40mm would be a perfect size for the Explorer II.

If I was in the market for an Exp2 it would be the 40mm over the 42mm...

if only rolex had kept the 40mm size with the new bracelet and clasp of the 42mm...
