In general, or in public, NFW. At least that is my go to answer.

But...

So there I was having a drink in BoBo’s steakhouse, near the Marina district (SF) when the guy next to me comments on my watch. He proceeds to pull off his A. Lange and Sons Datograph and we swap watches while talking. Dang, if that isn’t one glorious watch. Not my style but still... I loved the build quality. He was gracious and knowledgeable, we had a great time talking.

It can happen. It did happen. It was just fine.

I want all my friends and watch enthusiasts to try them on I encourage it.

Only upon trying it on your own wrist do you really know if it’s for you.

Letting a stranger try my watch? Not gonna happen. Only family, friends, nice work colleagues.

Never! Why would you want to put yourself in a situation like that! Also imagine explaining to your insurance you let a stranger try it on! It would be VOID!!!

I have clients who would do this. It’s beautiful but it’s probably going to lead to tears at some point.

Since it is almost impossible to try the these models in AD because of stocks , I am kind of desperate to ask stranger who wears one of those models.

So I am just wondering if a stranger (with a reasonable judgment that they're not gonna rob you) bump into you, ask about your Rolex, and ask to try it on, what would you do? Are you leaning to respond by "leave me alone" or pridefully showcase your precious ?

I was at an AD last summer wearing the 126710 BLRO and the guy next to me recognized it and was pretty excited to see it in the steel. He asked to try it on and take a pic. I let him- he ended up being the person who runs the local Red Bar. It’s circumstantial-

I'd say depends. For example, I was on an airplane (so it's already a more safe environment, because nobody will run away) and a man next to me was wearing a DSSD, while his son was wearing a YM. I noticed his son looking at my GMT a couple of times and if either of them wanted to try my GMT on in that setting, I'd have no issues with that.

That being said, somebody out of the blue on the street? Not happening.

NO PROBLEM, as long as his ankle is rigged to the pin of a hand grenade.

Call me naive and I am, but I was just sincerely curious.
It was a fair question, but clearly one that touched a nerve. You got your answer, and you learned another thing: far fewer people read your follow-ups than your initial post, so when starting a thread, ask yourself how much you want to keep having the answer shoved down your throat long after you got the point and thanked everyone for it.

Welcome to TRF.

The last time a friend try on my Daytona, he clean my watch crystal by rubbing it against his work Jeans. I cringed and said nothing. So be warn when you let anyone try on your watch.
Also, if the strange has on a nice watch and said you can try his on, how do you know his is real? I know a few work colleagues that wear fakes. That stranger might run off with your watch.

A tough crowd here with these comments. I haven't been in the game that long but remember about a year ago when I was at an AD searching for my first Rolex. A person that came in looking at the same watches next to me took off his LV and handed it to me for a closer look and insisted that I try it on, just after a couple of minutes of talking watches with him (I didn't even ask).
I didn't think it was a big deal at the time, but based on the comments here, it seems to have been an exceptional situation. Hard for me to believe that most wouldn't even consider it if the situation was appropriate.

In the confines of a Boutique or AD, the likelihood is that those involved are of a similar mindset, so no problems there at all. Surely you would think twice elsewhere?

OP - If we lived in the same area and you wanted to come by and try on watches and chat I'd love to have you for a drink and talk watches. I think that is what these get togethers we do here is all about. A stranger in an airport, though? No sir.

I can't imagine me allowing a stranger to try on my watch. I would only allow a friend or relative to try on one of my watches.
Maybe, a big maybe in an AD.

In an AD would be a different story. Especially if someone was shopping. I've had similar conversations several times with people. But off the street as stated that would be a no from me.
