Key Bridge Struck and Collapsed Baltimore
Woke up to scenes of devastation in my native Baltimore this morning. A large cargo ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge causing a complete collapse. Many cars and trucks fell into the water. The only saving grace in all this is that is happened at 1:30 in the morning when traffic is light.
For those that aren't familiar with the bridge, this is where the Baltimore Beltway crosses the Patapsco River which leads to the Inner Harbor downtown. This is the route cargo ships take to get to the port. The cruise ships also cross under this bridge. During the day this bridge handles a lot of vehicle traffic. Thankfully not many cars were crossing at the time. |

I just saw the video now. Apparently it’s also one of the longest continuous truss bridges in the world at 1.2 miles long, with main section being 1200ft span. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

As someone who drives across many bridges often [living in a river town] this is scary. Hope the all the missing are found & ok.

Incredible photos of a horrific tragedy to the people and victims. The economic impact of this loss of a main traffic artery will be devastating also. Hearts and prayers to everyone impacted.

Wow. What mess.
Hope the death toll is very low. The reports say the ship lost power and control and issues a mayday call. "A massive cargo ship leaving the Port of Baltimore lost power and issued a mayday call shortly before striking a major bridge early Tuesday, giving officials a brief chance to stop cars and try to evacuate the span before it collapsed into the river. By Tuesday morning, six construction workers who had been fixing potholes on the Francis Scott Key Bridge remained missing as divers and other emergency workers on boats and helicopters continued to search for them."

Devastating. Are these deep waters? Horrible to think of the people still missing. A few hours later and it could have been during rush hour traffic.

I think this video shows pretty well what could have happened:
https://twitter.com/i/status/1772535652178870576 It was lucky that there were so few people on the bridge. And what a sad story for those who were not lucky enough to escape in time :( The video also shows that a few seconds earlier there were even more cars on the bridge... |

Just heard an update on the local radio. Six still missing. Apparently the ship got a mayday call out just before the collision. This gave the local officials just enough time to close the bridge so no traffic was on the bridge at the time of the collapse. The people who went in the water were all part of construction crews that were working on the bridge overnight. Two have been rescued. The bridge sits over a 50' shipping channel. This could have been a lot worse if that mayday call wasn't received. Some really good news in all of this bad news.

Sad for those who were/are lost, I hope there are more survivors.
They say this will impact the East Coast freight industry for 6 months or more. |

Wild and sad stuff for those on the bridge and their families. Hopefully some positive comes from recovery efforts.

Considering you can drown in a foot or less of room temperature water, this is plenty deep. Deep enough that an ocean-crossing container ship can safely transit. Chance of survival for the average swimmer in open water is slim to none. Loss of body heat, exhaustion & dehydration may take you to meet Davey Jones before the sharks do. What a tragedy...

Super scary. We have a friend who moved out to Baltimore she was our first phone call this morning. Thoughts and prayers to everyone involved. Freezing waters, a 50ft fall and darkness all make survival extremely difficult.

Oh my bad I must have gotten the water depth and the bridge height confused.

Doubtful. It’s the 18th largest port in the US. The other east coast ports can pick up the slack. But the impact on Baltimore is an entirely different story.

The ship radioed a MayDay call a few minutes prior to the collision, which saved many lives

They will have the port back up and running in no time. Won't take that long to clear the channel - a matter of a few weeks I imagine. Rebuilding the bridge is a different story.

So awful. Thoughts and prayers for everyone affected. The last I saw was that the missing are presumed dead. Truly a miracle more weren’t on the bridge.

Tragic for the six who fell and were killed and their families. We hope their loss is not in vain and the lessons learned will spur action to better protect against future incidents.
Kudos to those who dove into the murky abyss in search of survivors. And the Maryland authorities who sprang into action upon receipt of the ship's Mayday notification. Stopping the traffic surely save many lives. I just wish there had been a protocol to evacuate the workers but that's such an unusual situation. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
