Gold spider

http://www.flickr.com/photos/2careless/3900306718/

A colleague has a friend who is a dental technician in Sydney. He caught a funnel web spider and used chloroform to put it to sleep. Before the spider all shrinked up, he put the spider into a denture type mould and then put the mould into the oven to burn out the spider, leaving the hollow mould.

Next, he injected dental gold into the mould and created this model.

Sadly, I'm just the photographer. Not mine.

Well Kai, I believe you but trust me when I say that I would not believe anyone else.

Dental gold is about 18K with probably silver and melts at about 1700deg C, that is all very serious work.

Tell him I'll ring him when my rabbit kicks the bucket.

I do know someone who can take a box of gold powder, melt it and pour it into a bucket of distilled water just so he can make a 10 kilograms mountain of 99.9999 pure gold pellets.

Your spider looks better.

Thanks Eddie. I did examine this thing and there are still a lot of "black" marks on the legs. see the attached. I think those black stuff are the remains of the real spider...

Yes, it would be difficult to 'vapourise' all of the spider IMO.
It was the fine hair on the spider that might have made me doubt the story. To remove the mould and leave those hairs would have been difficult.

It's a bit like judging a Rolex without actually holding it in your hand.

5cm! That's one heck of a large spider. Eek! I really do not like spiders, but that is pretty impressive work that your friend did.

Why would you kill the spider just to do something like that. Waste and cruel in my humble opinion.

A funnel web is a dangerous spider, it's bite can be lethel to some people.

I wouldn't go to the trouble of making jewelry out of it but if I found it near my home or place of work I'd definitely kill it.
