Huge wound to 5164 - what to do?
Just had an unfortunate incident on my way back from lunch where my 5164 made contact with someone else’s watch who was walking the opposite direction. To my horror it resulted in the below:
Left a large ‘blemish’ on the brushed bezel. Usually I’m a no polish guy but to me I don’t think I can wear it without it bothering me every time I look at it due to the surface area of the blemish - it's actually not a deep wound but it just affects a large proportion of the brushed area. Is my only solution to fully service the watch with Patek? Or can they do just a light brushing? Any input is appreciated. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

i would get it fixed as it would bother me too. Probably going to have to get a service too though as im not sure they will polish it without.
Since you are in London, take it to the salon and see what they say.

Oh man. This happened to me with my grand Seiko snowflake. Walking down the hall someone wearing some POS Michael Kors type watch ended up smashing his right into mine and left some scratches. Very frustrating.
I’d recommend having Patek polish just the bezel. But it would HAVE to be Patek, I wouldn’t let anyone else touch it. |

Ouch, that's painful! That said, learn to live with it and take it out at service. These things are not meant to be polished too frequently - it could happen again the day after you get it back from polish.
I too, had a similar experience with my 5164 in the first few weeks. Some lady decided to shove past me in the underground mall of my office tower and smacked her purse with all kinds of metal studs square into my wrist and left a nice ding on the bezel. It bothered me for a week or so then I got over it and continued to enjoy. Funnily enough, my mark was also right at the 12 o'clock area. What's up with that? |

Have you tried using something like a "Sunshine" metal polishing cloth on it to see if it is more than just a surface issue? Might make it less unbearable.

Sounds like a really bad idea to use something like that on a brushed surface... it will make it look a lot worse!

Eek, that would really bother me. I want to say I would learn to live with it but I know that would probably last 2 weeks max and it would be off to PP. How long have to had it for? Anywhere close to being due for service?

That sucks! What happened to the other watch? I assume it wasn't as nice as yours.

You forgot to do the WIS walk. You have to walk holding your wrist in front of you to avoid potential dangers. :)

Ugh, sorry to hear about it. Yeah, the bezel on those, the 5167, etc are just fragile for daily wear if you want it to keep looking new-ish. Agree with others, only let Patek handle it. Just fixing the big blemish should be a fast month or less turnaround one would guess as no movement work is requested.

I would leave it alone. Sooner or later imperfections will appear on the beautiful bezel of a Aquanaut/Nautilus.

the other option is to wear the hell out of it for a while and then get it fixed. Its always nice to have some time when you are not worried about your watch. Long term though it would still bother me as i said earlier and i would absolutely 100% polish that out. No rush though and wait six months or as long as you can stand it. Who knows you may actually like not having to keep it pristine as some people are fine with scratches and dents after they get a few.

I like this suggestion. Use this scratch as an excuse to wear that watch like you stole it for, say, 6 months. That should be a very liberating feeling, and you can get it polished back to new then, having enjoyed the heck out of the watch. Who knows, by that time you may even have changed your mind about getting it fixed at all, if it's worn throughout.

It would bother me to no end so I would fix it NOW. Just have Patek handle it and only Patek

I've been looking for a properly used 5167. Not a wrist princess like most pictures posted here. Unmarked watches all look the same. I feel it looks better with some scratches. It puts the bezel off balance with just the one scratch but when you get a few more it won't bother you as much.

My honest advice is get over it! I had a big scratch on mine between 2 an 4 and thought it the end of the world. I couldn’t take my eyes off it. I then compounded it with two more between 12.00 and 2.00. A few months later I don’t really notice them, it’s what happens when you wear a watch. I had a similar experience with an APRO, it bugged me so much I sent it off for a very expensive service and polish. The watch may have been repolished earlier , whatever, I never liked how it looked when it came back. If you wear it all the time it will get scratched and dinged, leave it in the safe and keep it pristine thats the options!

it did happen the first time i wore it with the olive...
so update on this - went to the salon as suggested by most people here, they were extremely helpful and one of the watchmakers did a simple fix that took 5 minutes. result was fantastic - they offered to take it for two weeks to do a full re brushing but I declined as this fix basically solved the issue. Thanks everyone for your inputs, hope this thread helps people in the future with a similar situation! |
