Stupid wisdom teeth

So thought I was LONG past worrying about it at 52 years old.
Huge pain in left side of my jaw last week and couldn't even remember which ones came out 30 years ago.
Run to dentist and sure enough - wisdom tooth coming in and just peaking through the gums. There was a small infection causing the pain but some antibiotics seem to have cured that.
Have a referral to a surgeon as my dentist couldn't remove it because it's still 90% below the gumline.
Might just leave it and see what happens.
Seriously though....52 years old????

Count yourself lucky. I am 70 and suddenly need several root canals and one tooth to be implanted. $18K minimum. And I take good care of my teeth. So teeth are definitely an issue for the aged (lol).

I had a wisdom tooth removed at age 40. Not pleasant, but long ago. Maybe the procedure has been refined or I had a tough tooth.Get lots of anesthesia and/or laughing gas.

Now working on a dental implant. No fun and expensive.

My 97 year old father in law advised me that your teeth eventually disintegrate. Good times!

I had my wisdom teeth pulled exactly one month ago today and I am 43.

It's a breeze these days.

Knocked me out for 30 mins, woke up only with some bleeding and almost no pain, and within 2-3 days I was basically back to normal.

I know everybody says this, but my father is the hardiest soul I know.

I've seen him distressed exactly once in my life, after he had a bilateral wisdom tooth extraction aged 60-odd.

My dentist suggested at my last check-up that I have mine removed prophylactically to reduce the future risk of infections.

I told him to Foxtrot Oscar.

I'm in my 60s and still have my wisdom teeth. Having them all removed when you're young is a very recent development in dental practice.

You're never going to convince me that all of a sudden evolution decided to create an entire generation of tiny jaws that all need thousands of dollars worth of oral surgery.

I had one pulled about 20 years ago in my early 30's...it didn't hurt too badly other than the recoil from pulling caused the dentist to jab his instrument into my tongue, which subsequently turned black and blue from bruising...that hurt more than the extraction, by far. Good luck with it!

Knocked out?

Local anaesthesia is all you need. Had my two upper wisdom teeth removed and the last one the anaesthesia didn't even work properly. Man up.

I love my teeth and take care of them. For example each night they are put in a special box right next to my watch caddy.

Don’t leave it. Listen to your dentist and have it removed. It will save you from agony later on.

Huh.... My dentist gave me a shot of Novocaine, cracked the tooth into a couple of pieces and yanked them out with a pair of pliers.

Oh man, I'm so sorry as that sounds rather painful. Albeit a big step I would want it out on your situation. This way you for sure avoid any issues with it down the road.

Nococaine, smovocaine.

I pulled my own out at a stoplight with a car jack and a tire iron.

And had time to flip the bird to the kid in the car next to me who was staring, all before the light turned green.

It's my understanding and experience that local anesthesia does not work if a tooth is already infected.

My orthodontist had to extract four molars when my teeth were straightened as an adolescent.

Rather than pull the frontmost molars, he pulled the rearmost. His plan, while unorthodox was that my wisdom teeth would have room to come in after my teeth were straightened. His plan worked and now my rear molars are my wisdom teeth.

I feel your pain Chris ... I had 4 impacted wisdom that were removed when I was 17 or so. I missed 3 weeks of school and couldn’t eat solids for quite some time.

I’m sure your dentist (or dental surgeon) will guide you as to next steps. The healng process is literally a pain.

I hope it goes well.

I was about the same age when I had to have mine removed. Today, it is just about pain free. I returned the 30 pain pills they gave me. Just be careful what you eat for several days and your go to go. P.S. I’m a baby when it comes to surgery, but it really was a waste of worry.

I had one wisdom tooth that became infected due to a small chip that the dentist did not find. The infection actually made the tooth loose. He gave me a local anesthetic and yanked it out in about 30 seconds. Didn't even have to go to a specialist like I did for the first two.

Go get it yanked Chris, it’s not too bad. I had one extracted in my mid 40’s, they loaded the area up with Novocain and all I really felt was the pressure of it being pulled. Oral surgery is still fairly primitive, I’m thinking had I been knocked out the Oral Surgeon would have had one of his feet on my face for leverage.

Just remembered that a local school superintendent died during a removal of a wisdom tooth, right before I had mine removed. Was put under and never came out. Had the same thing happen to a cousin, for a minor surgery.
After that, I thought I would live with the local pain killer. I know the odds are low of something happening, but it is there.

100% agree on this...never ever go under general anaesthesia unless you have no good option. Not worth the risk for pulling a tooth.
