I think I’m going to bite the bullet!

In 1991, I was very close to buying a Sub no date from the Navy Exchange in the Philippines for $1500.

Fast forward 29 years, I still don’t have a Rolex, but I’ve bought my wife an Omega and very recently her first Rolex and I think it’s my turn now.

I’ve been following Sub prices on used models and for what people are wanting, I’m thinking I should go new. I’ve waited 29 years, so what’s a few more if I order from the local AD.

My questions...

If I order new, do I pay for it now? How long do you estimate a no date would take to come in? I don’t know if they will negotiate, but what if any would be a reasonable discount from msrp?

Any other tips?

I may visit the store today.

Expect to wait a while. Highly doubt you’ll get it less than msrp but stranger things have happened

Happy hunting

Too many people willing and able to purchase Rolex now. You will have to wait and probably will not get a discount.

MSRP is the discount, unfortunately. LOL.

Typically, most A.D.’s will take a deposit and put you on the list for one. But, realistically, there is no estimate of how long you would wait. It is up to how that particular A.D. works, and how honest they are with regards to Rolex’s requirements regarding distribution of their products. If it is an AD who only caters to their high-paying/volume customers, you may wait years for that model. No date submariner is particularly sought after, so it’s tough.

Conversely, you may get lucky and have an authorized dealer that will give it to the next person on the list. Then it depends on how many people are ahead of you. Realistically you can expect to wait a while either way, unless you have a prior relationship.

You may die before your turn comes, so make sure the AD transfers your slot to your wife or whomever. Or you could pay a bit extra and buy on the grey market. Subs do not carry much of a premium and you can enjoy it tomorrow.

Expect to pay msrp. Don't put a deposit down or pay up front. Visit all the ADs near by and express your interest. If they don't have a Sub available, ask them to take your name and call when they have one available. Keep visiting to let them know you are serious.

If Rolex releases a new version of the Sub at Basel in April, all bets are off. ADs will sell to their established customers before you. Sorry, no way of knowing what will happen.

If you can find a smaller authorized dealer they’ll be more willing and able to work with you. Big fish small pond...

Lots of competition to buy right now so tell them the same history you just posted. Good luck. Long time coming. Be sure to let us know when you get one!

I would contact several AD's, even in different countries. Some people fly to other countries to get one.

I put my name on the "list" yesterday for a Sub no date. They couldn't promise anything.

I waited two hours before they called! They said they received 2 that afternoon. I pick it up Monday.

Visit the AD and tell them that story. A little rapport and background might be all it takes.

They get inundated with folks sticking their heads in just to ask if they have any stainless sport watch with no other interactions.

This is a good point. I think you might have a better shot than the average person with that story. No promises, but this is a really good thought
