Good news and bad news.
Good news first.
This is the second time I travel with my GMT but the first time I travel to a different time zone and actually get to use it's GMT features. Now I fully understand my watch features and am excited to be able to use it to it's maximum capacity. Bad news? I spotted a nice YM on a black leather band on one of the attendants. I commented on it and he didn't quite get me. Thought maybe it was the noise within the cabin that didn't allow him to hear me so I repeated again: "Nice YM!" and still deer in headlights look until I pointed at it. He smiled and nodded and took my drink order. I'm thinking, man! This guy travels more than me! Maybe he has the hookup and knows a good AD somewhere in the world and maybe I could hit it! So I asked: "Where'd you get it?" to which he replies: "China!". Yeah... He said it was a fake and that he's got a lot more where that came from.

Needless to say, the conversation ended there.

if you didn't know it was a fake, he thought you knew it was a fake. You cornered him with the second inquiry and the best defense is a good offense, he came clean thinking you had the drop on him....

I wonder if he cracked it open, would it have a little note inside it?

Since YMs don't come on leather straps it's not too surprising it's not Rolex . . . some owners might choose to put them on straps of course but I bet a very high percentage leave them on the original metal bracelets.

Again, another example of why you should avoid watch conversations unless you are among WIS's.

I found it's usually not a good idea to engage the 'help' in convo. That way situations like this one, which was embarrassing to both parties can be avoided.

Lots and lots of fakes out there. Just goes to show you that buying a watch should be more for your self than for others. I find no one really appreciates watches anyways. A couple cousins and I are truly WIS's and that's it. I had a client who had the nerve to accuse me mine was fake. He picked it up and said it's supposed to have a sticker i was like ok give me my watch back. Told him go to the dealer and take a look at them and then talk to me.

I had the same thing happen to me in a coffee shop in spain. I caught a glimpse of a Sub on one of the waiters so said "nice watch" at which point he was about to show me properly when he saw mine (explorer at the time) and then retracted his wrist saying in broken english "imitation".. go figure...
I did think it was strange seeing someone serving coffee with a Rolex on but at the time, i thought he might be the owner or perhaps just saved up for a long time... but no, i was wrong! At the end of the day, if he/she is serving coffee etc, its probably fake... and in your case, I guess flight attendants dont get paid what they used to... To me, a fake watch tells me a LOT about the owner... I would rather wear a genuine Timex than a fake Rolex... |

I have had the almost same experience here in Nice, but this waiter had the real thing (SubDate). We had a nice chat about everything and watches in special. He needed to have the watch regulated and I pointed him in the right direction, he was also courious about the nato strap I was wearing and I told him where he could get one. He got some new customers he had to attend, but we had a nice 10-15min discussion.
