I love the 1665 and I wear it every day. I do not look at it as an investment though, its just a mechanical piece of art that I love. Th

Still want that gorgeous "Retro" 1655, though...
I have a wonderful '78 1665 SD- Mk 1 dial - bought on this forum, and it's still my favorite vintage watch. Love the Superdome (mine replaced with NOS, according to HQMilton in SF).
BUT . . . . I really want a beautiful example of the 1655 Explorer, for all the same reasons as noted above by oh-so-many of you. The "cool" factor of that dial is just too much for me to resist. That said, ... pricewise, I will definitely be looking in the low-mid 'teens. There's no way we should be letting $20K become the norm for this. And as we all know, it will sell for whatever people are willing to pay for it. By the way, wasn't there something special about the '84 1655? The last year or something? For now, I have to love my SD (Fortunately, it's not too difficult!):

I bought a 1655 about 2 years ago and I did not like the confusing "disco dial" which initially is not easy to read correctly and made a mental note just to stuff it in the safe and leave it to one of my sons when I eventually expire this mortal coil. Also I really liked my 39mm Explorer and that became my favourite and daily beater. However about a year ago I had a change of attitude and being an old chap I thought I should start wearing my oldest watch which is the 1981 1655. I have worn it for about 170 days in the last 10 months and I just want to wear it out. It is simply a brilliant watch and very much under the radar which I like. About 2 weeks ago I was gawping at some Rolex in a AD in Venice and 4 American tourist came up beside me and started to talk Rolex and I got dragged into the conversation. We discussed the shop Rolex, also the Rolex on their own wrists but not one of them noticed my 1655 and that really did please me. I walked away with a smile on my face. Regards Mick - today on holiday in Spain and wearing a GMT 16710 but wishing it was the 1655. |

Prices are going up on these 1655s, like everything else, such as red 1680s. I never thought I'd see the day that red Subs would reach the mid-teens and higher, and sell for more than vintage SDs, but they are now. |

Yes, vintage sports Rolex's have gone up considerably. I was fortunate enough to buy this 66's glit gloss 1675 for a descent price.IMG_2238.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Thanks, it was one of the best gloss dials I have ever seen so I had to get my hands on it. Unfortunately, the hands do not match the dial markers so I need to find hands that match, but I am having difficulty finding.(VRM page included) The small 24h hand matches the dial markers. Can you recommend a web site? Thanks Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Sweet! I've bought from Good Watch before. He's a good guy with some super inventory. Japan vintage prices are higher than US ones, though...
